• MSRP of $75,000 including destination charge
  • No standard air conditioning
  • 505-horsepower V8 engine and manual transmission

Chevy announced the price of its latest high-performance model that arrives in dealer showrooms this spring. The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is $75,000, including a destination charge of $995. With a 505-hp V8, no available automatic transmission and a long list of race-ready components, the Z/28 is built to deliver performance on the track.

In fact, the base Z/28 even lacks air conditioning to save weight. Drivers who want a bit of civility, though, can opt for Chevy's only option package for the Z/28. For $1,150, it brings air conditioning and 6-speaker audio instead of the basic, 1-speaker setup that comes standard.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 isn't quite as powerful as the supercharged 580-hp Camaro ZL1, but Chevy says it's quicker on the track. The Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged car, and components are optimized for performance. The hand-built 7.0-liter LS7 engine uses dry-sump oiling to lower the car's center of gravity. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with 6-piston front calipers are lighter than the ZL1's while providing more stopping power. Instead of the Magnetic Ride Control suspension used on the ZL1, Chevy instead chose spool-valve dampers tuned for track use.

And while Camaro ZL1 buyers can choose an automatic transmission, only a 6-speed manual is available for the Z/28. It transmits power to the rear wheels through a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Compared to other performance models from Chevy, the Z/28 is pricey. The Camaro ZL1, for example, starts at $56,050. At $51,995, the new-for-2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is even more affordable. Of course, it's also less powerful and, with only two seats, arguably less practical, too.

But Camaro Z/28 buyers won't be looking for practicality in a $75,000 car that doesn't come with air conditioning. Instead, they will go in search of quick lap times. For that purpose, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 appears equipped to deliver.

What it means to you: If track days are your thing, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 may be the ideal machine. Order one starting in late January for spring delivery, or claim the very first production model -- VIN 0001 -- at Barrett Jackson's Scottsdale auction on January 18.
