What Is It?

The Volvo Concept XC Coupe is a 2-door crossover SUV. It's based on what Volvo calls its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) manufacturing process. It means all sorts of vehicles can be made from one platform.

Volvo, a company not known for its passion as much as its emphasis on safety, seems fired up about this 4-seater. It aims the car at those young people we see in so many TV ads, the ones with the "active lifestyle" and, in particular, lovers of "gravity sports." While it's reasonable to assume that practically every sport is influenced by gravity, this term covers downhill racing on wheeled things such as street luge, bicycles and skateboards. It doesn't sound at all safe.

The Concept XC Coupe is "ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back." That's a reference to the coupe's generous ground clearance and protection moldings, suggesting it can go at least some way off-road and to the top of some steep slope.

Will Volvo Ever Sell It?

Volvo would be crazy not to. Crossovers are popular right now, and the trend is to go toward compact. The C30 Coupe was pleasant enough but never really had anything special about it. An XC Coupe might just be the hit Volvo desperately needs. And since the manufacturing capability is there, why not do something bold?

Why It's Important

This car company has kept a low profile since being bought by a Chinese concern, Geely, in 2010. So it has to have something like the Volvo Concept XC Coupe to bring the Volvo name back into the conversation and back on buyers' wish lists specifically.
