• Hyundai's hydrogen-powered Tucson Fuel Cell travels 435 miles on one tank
  • Long-distance drive conducted by independent European drivers
  • Tucson Fuel Cell available for lease in Southern California

The hydrogen-powered Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell crossover has set a new record for driving distance on a single tank of hydrogen. So says Hyundai, which reported that two independent drivers recently took the Tucson Fuel Cell on a whopping 435-mile drive on one tank, spanning three European countries in the process.

According to Hyundai, the record-setting drive recently took place between Oslo, Norway, and Malmö, Sweden, traversing those two countries and also heading into Denmark. The automaker says the drive took around 10 hours, averaging 47 miles per hour across a variety of roads from city streets to high-speed highways. Interestingly, the result seemed to surprise even the drivers who crafted the route.

"We had planned to finish in Copenhagen but realized there was enough hydrogen left in the tank for a longer drive," said Marius Bornstein, one of the drivers. "To achieve this distance on just one tank of hydrogen shows the potential of this technology and the ability of the Hyundai [Tucson] Fuel Cell."

Although Hyundai didn't set up the drive, the automaker likely relishes the positive attention toward its alternative-fuel crossover. The Tucson Fuel Cell recently reached dealers in select markets, becoming one of the first hydrogen-powered vehicles available anywhere in the world. In the U.S., it's offered for lease at only a few dealers in California, home to some of the country's only hydrogen refueling stations.

Many shoppers and environmentalists are touting hydrogen fuel-cell technology because it's among the most eco-friendly propulsion methods in existence. Hydrogen cars use only hydrogen and oxygen for fuel, and their sole emission is water. Unfortunately, hydrogen propulsion is expensive to develop, and widespread use would require thousands of hydrogen refueling stations across the country.

Still, shoppers interested in the Tucson Fuel Cell can rest a little easier after the crossover's record-setting drive, knowing that they won't need to have any of the range anxiety suffered by electric-vehicle owners.

What it means to you: The Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell can travel at least 435 miles on a single tank -- big news for car shoppers in Southern California who are worried about electric-vehicle range.
