Pros: Powertrain selection; modern engineering; technology advancements; coupe and convertible body styles

Cons: Modest power gains; reduced headroom; critics claim it looks too much like a Fusion

What's New: The 2015 Ford Mustang is completely redesigned, blending classic Mustang styling cues with a modern look and technology. The major improvements include a new turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine option, an independent rear suspension and numerous performance, safety and infotainment technology upgrades.

The 2015 Ford Mustang is completely redesigned, growing in width, shrinking in height, and remaining about the same length on an identical wheelbase -- all while delivering a roomier interior and a bigger trunk in a package estimated to weigh 200 pounds less than the car it replaces. Available as a fastback or convertible model, the new 2015 Mustang is designed to take the iconic sports coupe from a storied history and loyal American buyers into a future dependent on younger buyers from around the globe.

The 2015 Mustang continues to compete against traditional rivals in the form of the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, but it is also expected to draw potential buyers away from a range of rear-drive sport coupes such as the Scion FR-S and BMW 4 Series. At the redesigned Mustang's debut party, only the standard and GT models were announced, though a high-performance successor to the Shelby GT500 is rumored to carry the fabled Cobra name.

A 3.7-liter V6 engine is standard equipment for the 2015 Ford Mustang, and in advance of its final certification Ford is saying that it makes 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. As an option, buyers can choose a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with a preliminary rating of 305 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the latter being available across a broad power spread from 2,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Choose the 2015 Ford Mustang GT and a 5.0-liter V8 engine is installed under the hood, which is perforated by functional air extractors. The V8 is expected to make at least 420 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque when burning premium unleaded fuel.

All three engines are paired with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox that offers shorter throws and more refinement for 2015. A 6-speed automatic transmission is optional and includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Additionally, the new 2015 Mustang comes with a standard MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension, adjustable powertrain and steering calibrations, upgraded brakes, optional performance packages and an available Launch Control system.

Ford says the new 2015 Mustang is equipped with Intelligent Access keyless entry and push-button ignition. And the car offers SYNC smartphone pairing technology with 911 Assist. Options include leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium audio system, a reversing camera, a blind spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system. Track Apps technology allows the Mustang's owner to track performance data related to acceleration, braking and cornering.

In addition, the 2015 Mustang is offered with MyFord Touch technology for the first time. In this application, though, Ford wisely provides traditional knobs for volume and tuning control, combined with buttons for other primary stereo functions. The dual-zone climate control system also features controls that are separate from the MyFord Touch touch-sensitive display screen.

Ford did not reveal prices for the 2015 Mustang during the car's late-2013 debut. Its pricing will be available closer to the fall 2014 on-sale date. Given the traditional Mustang buyer, though, don't expect prices to rise much in comparison to the vehicle it replaces, despite the significant improvements in terms of refinement, style, sophistication and technology.
