Jeep recently unveiled the most brutish version of its iconic Wrangler yet – the Rubicon 392. The “392” pertains to the cubic inches of the engine, but the headline here is that under the hood is a massive 6.4-liter V8. The standard Wrangler engine is a 3.6-liter V6.
Jeep has created a monster with this Wrangler, and while its attributes are many, here are five things, in particular, you should know.
- It’s fast: The Wrangler 392’s V8 makes 470 horsepower. That’s almost 200 more than the standard V6. With that power comes speed. The Wrangler 392 Rubicon can do 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds – similar to a sports car.
- It’s rugged: The Wrangler 392 wears the Rubicon name, which means it’s the most off-road-capable version of the Wrangler. It’s got the goods that make adventurists, and outdoor enthusiasts salivate. Included is a 2-inch lift kit that gives this rig 10.3 inches of ground clearance, heavy-duty Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lock locking differentials, and an electronic sway-bar disconnect.
- It’s been a long time coming: Jeep’s iconic off-roader has not had a V8 in nearly 40 years. And the last one to have it, a CJ model, only made 125 horsepower. Oh, how the times have changed. While this latest Wrangler also offers a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a diesel V6, and even a plug-in hybrid, it’s the V8 many have been pining for.
4. It’s 4-door only: The standard Jeep Wrangler is available in 4-door (called the Unlimited) or 2-door models, but the 392 Rubicon is only available as 4-door. In reality, that bigger and more practical Wrangler is the version most buyers choose.
- It arrives next year: If you’ve waited this long for a V8 Jeep Wrangler, hold off just a little longer. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 is slated to arrive in the first quarter of 2021. How much will it cost? That hasn’t been announced, but it won’t be cheap as the most powerful and most capable model yet. At present, a topline High Altitude Wrangler starts just shy of $50,000.
