What Is It?
Beware the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, the most powerful production muscle car the world has ever seen.
And this is a world that was positively tickled by the Challenger SRT Hellcat and its 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8. But Dodge's diabolical engineers have found a way to conjure up more power, endowing the Demon with a mighty 840 hp and 770 lb-ft of torque. (SRT stands for Street and Racing Technology, by the way.)
Let's get into some numbers. Standstill to 30 miles per hour occurs in just one second. One second. Hitting 60 mph happens in (gasp) 2.3 seconds, making it the world's fastest in this time-honored way of measuring speed. The quarter mile is dispatched in 9.65 seconds while hitting 140 mph -- another record.
This engine is claimed to be the first for a production car where it's designed to run on high-octane 100-plus or 91-octane gasoline. It breathes through the largest functional hood-mounted air scoop on a production car, measuring 45.2 square inches. To save weight, the rear seats and the front passenger seat have been ditched. Getting them reinstalled costs $1 per seat.
Dodge says the Demon is considered too fast for the drag strip by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and has already been banned by that organization. But that hasn't stopped the company from fitting a Drag mode, with extra cooling taken from the air conditioning system to keep under-hood temperatures in check, and offering an options bundle called the Demon Crate that includes narrow wheels up front and Demon-branded track tools.
Production is limited to 3,000 units for the United States, plus 300 going to Canada. The price includes a day's tuition in high-performance driving at the highly respected Bob Bondurant School.
