What Is It?
The 2019 Audi A6 is a new generation of the premium midsize sedan. But boy, has it been a long time coming. While major rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class have wowed buyers with their much newer and tech-packed generations, it feels like the A6 was stuck in the first decade of the 21st century.
Luckily, that generation was quite a standout vehicle in the first decade of the 21st century, which has stood it in good stead until now. But time sneaks up on all of us. If there’s one thing Audi designs can do, though, it’s face the years with a serene and unfussy dignity. The new car manages to look taut and elegant at the same time. The interior is classily sparse, offering the option of Audi’s configurable driver information display (the Virtual Cockpit).
Right now, firm facts are few. We’re expecting a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine for the base model. But the all-new A6 made its world debut at the 2018 Geneva show with a 340-horsepower turbo 3.0-liter V6 as part of a mild hybrid system that also uses a lithium-ion battery.
This is the same drivetrain found in the new 2019 Audi A7 (the two cars share a platform). There’s a clever feature where the engine’s stop/start system can be triggered by a front-mounted camera that can see if the traffic ahead has moved off. We’re also anticipating semi-autonomous driving features, because the third decade of the 21st century is approaching
Also on Audi’s Geneva show stand this year is the e-tron prototype crossover, but the company is planning to divulge full details on this in August. It’s an all-electric vehicle with three motors, sized between the Q5 and Q7, and with a claimed range of around 310 miles. But that estimate could drop to something like 275 miles using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methods. No word on pricing or availability yet.
It’s too soon for A6 pricing as well. For an idea, the 2018 A6 range starts at $50,675.
When Can You Get It?
Again, nothing official for the 2019 Audi A6, but later this year isn’t a bad guess.

Although the current fashion is for crossovers, a great German sedan is still one of the finest ways of getting around.
