Acura TLX Prototype: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The Acura TLX Prototype is a midsize luxury sport sedan that previews an upcoming replacement for the popular Acura TL sedan. While the TLX is technically just a concept car, we expect the production version to reach dealers later this year with styling and specs that closely mirror the concept car.

In terms of styling, that means an aggressive appearance that looks like a heavily updated version of today’s boldly styled TL. There are large alloy wheels, sharp edges, muscular wheel arches and Acura’s signature LED headlights in front. Acura didn’t show off the TLX Prototype’s interior, but we expect that it, too, will be a revised version of the cabin from today’s TL.

Under the hood, the TLX Prototype — and eventually the production-ready TLX — offers two engine choices. For drivers interested in fuel economy, there’s a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. Acura hasn’t announced power figures for this engine, but we expect that it will roughly mirror the 201-horsepower figure from the smaller ILX sedan. There’s also a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a new 9-speed automatic that will likely share its 280-hp rating with today’s TL.

Will Acura Ever Sell It?

While the production version of Acura’s upcoming TLX may look a little different from the prototype, we expect to see a TLX very similar to the one shown here in Detroit reach dealers this summer or fall.

Why It’s Important

The Acura TLX Prototype is important because it previews the upcoming replacement for Acura’s TL sedan, which remains one of the brand’s most popular cars. It’s also important because the TLX is adding 4-cylinder power for the first time to Acura’s midsize lineup, and it’s debuting two new transmissions, as well. If you’re interested in a midsize luxury sedan such as the Infiniti Q50, Lexus ES, Lincoln MKZ or even Mercedes C-Class, the TLX may be worth adding to your shopping list.
