There will definitely be a Lincoln Aviator on sale soon, but the car shown at the NY Auto Show isn’t it. Lincoln is calling it a “production preview.” That’s different from a concept vehicle, which often only hints at what a future vehicle will look like. In this case, we think the Aviator will look a lot like the vehicle shown in New York, but with some minor trim and safety related differences. A few things we know for sure, the Aviator is stunning up close, it’ll be a 3-row SUV, it’s based on a new platform that utilizes rear or all-wheel drive and there will be a plug-in hybrid version. Lincoln’s design director, David Woodhouse, says many of the Aviator’s details were inspired by aviation.
It’s a good-looking SUV and gives Lincoln — and luxury shoppers — exactly what they need in terms of a full line of plush sport utility vehicles. For 2018, the Lincoln Navigator earned Autotrader’s “Must Test Drive” recognition, and we had the Lincoln MKC on that list in 2016. We also suspect the Lincoln Aviator is a preview of what Ford has planned for the next Explorer.
