The average new car transaction price in the U.S. is around the $35,000 mark, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend that much to get a new car. In fact, you can spend well under half that amount and get a brand new car that might be nicer than you think for that kind of money.
The most affordable new cars on the market might not be flashy and might not have all of the latest technologies or creature comforts, but new vehicles on the lowest end of the pricing spectrum have come a long way. The days of penalty boxes like the Geo Metro are long over, and entry-level cars are nicer than ever. For example, every car on this list comes equipped with a backup camera, which is now mandatory for all new vehicles.
Let’s take a look at the most affordable cars on the new market and see which ones give you the most bang for your buck. All prices below include destination charges.
8) 2019 Chevrolet Sonic – $16,295
The Chevy Sonic isn’t even Chevy’s smallest car, but it still makes it into the top eight most affordable new cars in 2019. To get this subcompact at a price this low, you need to opt for the LS Sedan with a manual transmission, but even at the base level, it comes with some nice features that might surprise you. It has a 7-in infotainment system with Bluetooth, steering wheel audio controls, 4G LTE Wi-Fi and 10 airbags. The Sonic’s turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes 138 horsepower and achieves up to 38 miles per gallon on the highway.
7) 2019 Kia Rio – $16,195
The Kia Rio is very close in price to the Chevy Sonic, but its performance and fuel economy aren’t quite as strong. Its naturally aspirated inline four makes 130 hp and its highway mpg is rated at 37. The Rio comes standard with a 5-in infotainment system with Bluetooth and has standard power windows, while most cars at this price point have old fashioned crank windows.
6) 2019 Hyundai Accent – $15,880
The Hyundai Accent is the mechanical twin of the Kia Rio, but it’s a little more affordable. The Accent has the same engine as the Rio, which means identical performance and fuel economy numbers. This Hyundai also has the nice perk of standard power windows. The only real differences between the Accent and the Rio are pricing and styling.
5) 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 – $15,690
The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is the 4-door sedan variant of Mitsubishi’s humble subcompact. The base ES trim isn’t too flashy, but it has the basics like cruise control and remote keyless entry. It also has a nice, big, 7-in screen with Bluetooth connectivity. The Mirage’s strong suit is fuel economy with its 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine achieving up to 41 mpg on the highway. However, it won’t win any drag races by only making 78 hp.
4) 2019 Ford Fiesta – $15,135
The Ford Fiesta might be on death row as Ford plans to kill off all of its passenger cars except the Mustang, but you can still get a brand new 2019 Fiesta at a very affordable price. The base Fiesta S Sedan presents a pretty good value with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 120 hp and returns up to 37 mpg. It has a Sync infotainment system with Bluetooth and a backup camera, which is par for the course. It’s not the most powerful car on the list, but the Fiesta has been praised for its fun-to-drive personality.
3) 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage – $14,690
The other cars on this list need to be optioned as sedans to get the prices this low, but the hatchback variant of the Mitsubishi Mirage is actually more affordable than the G4 sedan version. Being the only hatchback on this list, it gives you a little more versatility in its cargo space plus its shorter length makes it a little more maneuverable. Other than that, the Mirage is pretty much the same as the Mirage G4, but it can get as much as 43 mpg making it the most efficient car on this list.
2) 2019 Chevrolet Spark – $14,095
The most affordable Chevy is also the second most affordable new car on the market. The Chevrolet Spark is a small city car that got a nice face-lift for the 2019 model year. Like the Sonic, the Spark comes with 10 airbags, Chevy’s 7-in infotainment system and OnStar, but the Spark gets the addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on the base model, which is awesome to see at this price point. Its 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 98 hp and gets up to 38 mpg which is pretty good, but for a car this small we’d like to see fuel economy in the 40s.
1) 2019 Nissan Versa Sedan – $13,255
The Nissan Versa has been going in and out of being the most affordable new car on the market and it earns that title again for the 2019 model year. If you want to spend as little money as possible on a new car, the Versa Sedan is the answer as the only new car coming in under the $14,000 mark after destination charges. The Versa Sedan makes 109 hp, gets up to 39 mpg and includes some modern tech like Bluetooth, the mandatory backup camera and even Siri Eyes Free technology for Apple users. The Nissan Versa isn’t flashy or fancy, but it’s a new car with a warranty at a very affordable price.
