Autotrader Find: 1983 Zimmer Golden Spirit

Devoted readers of Oversteer, welcome to the most unusual Ford Mustang you’ll ever find for sale. It’s a 1983 model, offered by Willowbrook Ford in the Chicago suburb of Willowbrook, Illinois, and it’s covered just 8,100 original miles. Oh yeah — and it’s not a Ford Mustang at all.

What you see here is a Zimmer Golden Spirit, which is a rather absurd, ridiculous, eye-catching coupe built using a V8-powered Ford Mustang as the base car (you can see it in the doors). Zimmer takes the Mustang, converts it into … this thing … and markets it as its own vehicle. I don’t have the exact numbers, but I’d guess the Golden Spirit is about three feet longer than a traditional Mustang.

Although I’m not exactly sure why Zimmer chooses the styling they do, their website — which is still active — notes that the company’s cars are “filled with visions of grace, grandeur, and the Great Gatsby.” Well, they certainly don’t look like regular ol’ Mustangs.

Inside, too, this Zimmer is special. The steering wheel is finished in gold, there’s extra wood everywhere, and the headliner appears to have some sort of monogram on it, possibly from the car’s original owner. In back, the trunk is replaced with, well, an actual trunk, with leather straps and all. There’s also the fenders, the hood ornament, and the little sun visors mounted on the A-pillar and emblazoned with flowers. It’s just … weird.

With that said, I could see how this is weird in a good way — and if you’re interested in what has to be one of the cleanest Golden Spirits around, this one is offered for $25,988. Find a Ford Mustang for sale
