Today’s Autotrader Find is an extremely well-preserved 1990 Hyundai Excel. The Excel was Hyundai’s first foray into the US market and it was sold here over two generations from 1986 through 1995. Sales of the first-gen Excel covered the 1986 through 1989 model years, while the second-gen model was sold from 1990 on. A version of the Hyundai Excel was also sold here as the Mitsubishi Precis from 1987 through 1994. The Excel competed with other ultra low-cost economy-car offerings from its era like the Volkswagen Fox (an example of which I featured as an Autotrader Find just last week) and believe it or not, the Yugo.
In its second-generation form, the Hyundai Excel was sold with one engine here in the US; a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 81 horsepower and 91 lb-ft of torque. Power was sent to the front wheels via a standard manual transmission, though an automatic was optional. Three bodystyles were offered; a 3-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan, and a 5-door hatchback, though this bodystyle was only offered for 1990.
This particular Hyundai Excel hails from the 1990 model year. It has just over 45,000 miles on the odometer, making it likely one of the most lightly-used Excels left in the United States. What’s so notable here is that unlike say a C4 Covette, of which numerous examples were bought and preserved, nobody exactly loved the Hyundai Excel when it was new. On top of that, quality of these early Hyundai’s was lacking to say the least, so finding one in this shape is especially uncommon. The example for sale here is white with a gray fabric interior, and everything looks to be in exceptional condition. If you’re interested in this Hyundai time capsule, it’s located at an independent dealership in Milwaukie, OR with an asking price of $4,995. Find a Hyundai Excel for sale
