Autotrader Find: Clean 1988 Isuzu Impulse Turbo

When you think of Isuzu, you probably think of rebadged Chevy trucks and SUVs and not rear-wheel drive sports cars. Today’s Autotrader Find is a car you may have never heard of; a 1988 Isuzu Impulse Turbo with reasonable mileage in great condition.

If the Isuzu Impulse name sounds familiar, it might be because it was the basis for the short-lived Geo Storm. However, that was the second-generation front-wheel drive Impulse. What you see here is the first-gen Impulse, which was rear-wheel drive.

The Impulse is a three-door liftback coupe with a bit of an odd shape. From the front it has a wedge shape kind of reminiscent of a Delorean, but from the back it looks more like an economical hatchback aside from that prominent spoiler.

1988 is a great year for the Impulse because it’s the first model year that every Impulse had a Lotus-tuned suspension, which was previously optional. This consisted of stiffer dampers, meatier sway bars, and upgraded spring rates. It also has “Handling by Lotus” badging and that cool aforementioned spoiler.

On the inside, you’ll find controls that move with the steering column, which was quite novel for 1988. You’ll also find lots of blue and a tweed-style fabric on the seats, which appears to be in excellent condition for a 1980s Isuzu.

Power for this Impulse comes from a turbocharged SOHC 2.0-liter inline-four engine rated at 140 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. Performance-wise, that puts it about on-par with the Mitsubishi Starion and Nissan 300ZX at the time.

This Isuzu Impulse Turbo is available for sale in Kutztown, Pennsylvania with an asking price of just under $12,000. That might sound a little high, but have you ever even seen one of these things? As of this writing, this is the only Impulse for sale on Autotrader. This might be the cleanest first-generation Impulse you ever see for sale. This is a very interesting alternative to more mainstream 1980s Japanese sports cars. Find an Isuzu Impulse for sale
