Weighing over 13 pounds less than a comparable aluminum wheel, the new 22-inch carbon fiber wheels soon available on the Bentley Bentayga luxury SUV are a major leap forward. Don’t expect to see them on economy cars any time soon, however.
That’s because they’re also likely to be majorly expensive, though if you have to ask about the cost of options on an SUV that starts at around $160,000… well, you know. Bentley has not said how much the carbon fiber wheels will cost when they become available this fall.
Bentley says the wheels are the largest carbon fiber wheels ever put into production, and they’re both stiffer and more impact resistant than alloy wheels.
A lighter, stiffer wheel allows for more responsive handling as well as improved braking performance. Additionally, the carbon fiber weave allows for air to disperse slowly in the event of a damaged wheel due to, say, a large pothole. That, in turn, reduces the shock of a full blowout, giving drivers more time to contemplate just how incredibly expensive that rut in the road was when they go to replace the cracked wheel.
The new wheels will be available through Bentley’s Mulliner division, which opens up additional personalization options. See Bentley Bentayga models for sale
