The Hennessey VelociRaptor is the SUV I Wish Ford Made

As many of you know, I love the Ford F-150 Raptor. I’m not alone. Everyone loves the Ford F-150 Raptor. There are long waiting lists at dealers for the new model, and used ones sell for big money, even when they’re many years old (with many miles traveled). It’s been a massive moneymaker, and it’s easy to see why: It’s cool, it’s exciting, and gas is cheap.

But I really want an SUV version.

There are two major reasons why this is. One is the fact that I’m just not a pickup guy. I don’t judge pickup people, I don’t think they’re annoying or “overcompensating,” as some annoying people suggest, or too aggressive or whatever. I think they’re just fine. I’m just not one of them. It isn’t my thing. I draw the line somewhere in the SUV realm.

The other reason I want an SUV Raptor is, of course, the added practicality. Pickups are very capable for a lot of tasks, but you can’t really lock stuff inside them without covering the bed — at which point you’re basically driving around in a slightly less practical SUV anyway. Why not just enclose it?

Well, that’s exactly what Hennessey did. The famous tuner in Texas, known for ultra-powerful Vipers and other domestic cars, created an SUV version of the Ford F-150 Raptor called the “VelociRaptor SUV.” Interestingly, it’s a seemingly simple creation: Instead of a pickup bed, it has an SUV rear, including a third-row seat — and for the tailgate, it has lifting glass plus swinging double doors, like many Ford Excursions did. In fact, the parts look like they came straight from the Excursion.

Of course, Hennessey being Hennessey, there was also some tuning involved — including horsepower boosts that took things to 600 or even 650 horses, plus additional torque and various other upgrades. On Hennessey’s website, the cost of this vehicle is listed at $160,000, which is eye-popping — but then, since Ford won’t make it, there’s really no other way to get it done. Maybe Ford will finally Raptor-ify an SUV when the Bronco comes out in a year or two. For now, this is just about the coolest SUV on the road. Find a Ford F-150 for sale

  1. Hennessey doesn’t build these. They’re built by Custom Autos by Tim. Same guys that make the Excursion conversions you’ve written about previously. Hennessey just puts a tune on these and passes them off as his own.

  2. It reminds me of an International Harvester Travelall, or possibly the less-known Travelette, which was a pickup version of the Travelall. Most people immediately put a cap on the bed, which made it awesome. I learned to drive on a Travelette, 3 tons of double I-Beam frame, and the biggest non-semi engine IH made (I think it was a 692hp V8…might have been 792…), with a Holley 4-barrel carb. You ain’t had fun until you learned to drive a 3 ton truck that thinks it’s a station wagon, in 6 inches of snow in an empty parking lot, doing slaloms around the light poles backwards at 40mph. That was my father’s idea of learning to drive. Like a stuntman.
