Jeep Grand Wagoneer Will Return, Other Models to Come

  • Jeep has a 5-year plan detailing new models and strategies
  • Grand Wagoneer name will return in 2018
  • Jeep will also roll out a new compact SUV

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is coming back. That’s the latest from Jeep, which recently laid out a 5-year plan that details the rebirth of the Grand Wagoneer SUV, along with other new models and upcoming strategies.

According to the plan, the Grand Wagoneer is expected to go on sale sometime during the second half of 2018. While that may seem like a long time from now, Jeep promises the SUV is worth the wait, going so far as to call it “the most premium Jeep we have ever made.” The Grand Wagoneer will also feature 3-row seating, addressing a problem many shoppers have with today’s 2-row-only Grand Cherokee.

Before the Grand Wagoneer reaches dealers, however, Jeep will bring a few other SUVs to market. One is the compact Renegade, which will launch later this year. Expected to feature a choice of 4-cylinder engines, the Renegade will compete with other style-focused compact SUVs such as the Nissan Juke and the upcoming Chevrolet Trax.

Jeep also says it has big plans between the launch of the Renegade and the Grand Wagoneer. The Patriot and Compass will be phased out by then, replaced with a new C-segment SUV likely designed to rival models such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. Though the name of this new SUV has not yet been revealed, Jeep has announced that it’ll go on sale sometime during 2016.

But in spite of so many new products on the way, Jeep hasn’t forgotten about the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The automaker says an all-new Wrangler is due out in mid-2017, while the Grand Cherokee will see an update in late 2015 ahead of a full redesign during the third quarter of 2017.

If you’re excited about the return of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer nameplate, you aren’t alone. The automaker dropped the iconic wood-trimmed model in the early 1990s after years of success. While Jeep offered Grand Wagoneer trim levels on early Grand Cherokees, the 2018 revival marks the first time the Grand Wagoneer name will be on a dedicated vehicle in more than 25 years.

What it means to you: Jeep’s 5-year plan shows that the brand is serious about regaining control in every segment of the SUV world.

  1. They completely screwed up when they stopped production of the Commander…..I had 2 of them and I made the huge mistake to trade it in for a Dodge Journey…what a fiasco and huge mistake on my part….i still drive the other commander and it’s been the greatest jeep I returned the Journey and got a wrangler for wife….3 more years to go for the Wagoneer…Let’s see what they come up with…By the way best Jeep SRT8 was the 2006 model or that generation with the twin exhaust in the middle I dont care for the other generations

  2. Its like everyone forgot about the Commander, why is it not even MENTIONED? Of-Road Capable, check. Luxury, check. 3rd Row Seating, check. Biggest Jeep Ever Made, check.
