The Mercedes-Benz performance world just got a new king. It’s the Mercedes-AMG GT R, a high-performance, track-focused version of the brand’s AMG GT sports car. It’s also painted a not-so-subtle shade of bright green.
Of course, we suspect you’ll be able to order a different color, should you buy your own, but Mercedes says the paint job is symbolic of Green Hell, a nickname for the famed Nuerburgring racetrack in Germany where the GT R was tested. Updates over the standard Mercedes-AMG GT include enhanced suspension, improved aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight construction.
And another, more important area has been updated: power. While the Mercedes-AMG GT S delivers 503 horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, the GT R makes a whopping 577 hp from the same engine. That should dramatically improve the car’s acceleration time, lap times and possibly even its top speed.
Mercedes has not yet announced when the Mercedes-AMG GT R will go on sale or what it costs, but we suspect it’ll command a hefty premium over the $131,000 AMG GT S.
