Aimed at so-called digital natives, the Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concepts were conceived and produced with extensive input from consumers. The two IDx concept cars offer radically different characteristics, each with their own unique identity. The first, the IDx Freeflow, reflects a casual, lifestyle-focused vision. The second, the IDx NISMO, is an ultra-sporty model of the future that looks as if it came directly from a driving simulator. Nissan’s co-creation defines a new relationship between Nissan and its customers.
What’s the Concept?
The IDx Freeflow is the more restrained of the two, with relatively modest 18-inch chrome wheels and pale yellow paint that gives it a casual feeling. It also features a seamless, rounded roof shape called a floating roof — another design twist that accentuates the simple box form of the body. Inside, metal trim mixes with denim upholstery for a unique look and feel. The round, no-nonsense steering wheel, attached to the level instrument panel, mounts a modern-looking speedometer. Overall, the IDx Freeflow exudes a hip, contemporary vibe.
The IDx NISMO, meanwhile, looks like something out of a video game. Nissan notes that many digital natives grew up racing virtual cars on their gaming consoles, so the IDx NISMO is designed to resonate with that experience. The NISMO features playful elements such as side-exit exhausts, more aggressive 19-in wheels and race-car-style stripes and decals. Inside, red synthetic suede upholstery is super sporty, while a simple gauge cluster emphasizes the IDx’s elemental nature. The NISMO also has contemporary touches such as front/rear and right/left aerodynamic spoilers.
The Nissan IDx Concept’s performance is yet to be determined. We think enthusiasts will clamor for a larger powertrain. In fact, we expect the IDx to provide strong competition to the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, both of which use a 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Nissan suggests that the Freeflow could have a 1.2- or 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while the NISMO might get a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with the CVT.
When should we expect the IDx in showrooms? Don’t hold your breath. It could take a while. But if and when it does hit the dealership, we are definitely looking forward to Nissan’s IDx co-creation.
