Maximum towing capacity is a whopping 35,500 pounds, a 52 percent increase over the outgoing model.
Two new V8 engines — one gas and one diesel — power the new Silverado HD.
When serious work needs to get done, you need an HD truck. The pickup truck arms race continues with one of the newest fighters being the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD, which recently madeits entrance at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show. It has a bold new look that’s actually very different from the new Silverado 1500 along with two impressive new engines available under the hood. The new HD Chevrolet has a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it aesthetic, but it’s refreshing that it doesn’t look just like its light-duty counterpart, but bigger.
More Muscle for More Work
The new gas engine in the Silverado HD is a 6.6-liter V8 which makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. That’s an 11 percent boost in power and a 22 percent increase in peak torque compared to the outgoing 6.0-liter V8. The result is 18 percent higher towing capacity at a maximum of 17,400 pounds.
For really heavy lifting, you can opt for the new Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8, which makes 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. It’s linked to a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission and gets a huge 52 percent towing capacity increase over the previous diesel up to 35,500 pounds.
The Little Things on the Big Truck
Other highlights of the new truck include "4 Auto" mode on 4-wheel-drive-equipped models, which electronically and seamlessly shifts between 4WD and two-wheel drive based on road conditions, an easy-to-fill diesel exhaust fluid tank on Duramax models, new advanced trailering mirrors and an easy-access engine block heater outlet.
Some cool new trailering tech on this new truck makes your work a breeze. There’s a total of 15 available camera views including HD surround vision and a transparent trailer feature allowing you to "see through" the trailer to the road behind you.
A few convenience features of the new truck include a BedStep feature and bigger CornerSteps making it easier to climb up to access the bed and a larger Crew Cab meaning more interior comfort for all occupants.
The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD will be available this summer and official pricing will be announced closer to launch.
