At this year’s Chicago Auto Show, Chrysler unveiled its new 2021 Pacifica minivan, which is loaded with safety features and will have the latest Uconnect 5 infotainment in addition to an optional all-wheel drive (AWD) system. While we’re tempted to say this new 2021 Pacifica will be the first AWD Chrysler minivan since 2004, we’d be wrong.
Here’s why: Chrysler later announced that it is selling an AWD version of the current Pacifica. This 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition, as it’s called, goes on sale in the third quarter of 2020.
Advanced AWD system
The new 2020 Pacifica AWD Launch Edition has an advanced new AWD system that can disconnect drive to the rear wheels for enhanced fuel economy. And in slippery conditions, it can send as much as 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels if necessary.
Stability is further enhanced by the automatic application of the brakes to a spinning wheel, thereby directing power to the opposing wheel with better traction. This means the 2020 Pacifica Launch Edition will keep moving in mid and snow, aided by self-sealing Michelin tires, size 235/60R-18.
The new AWD system features a transfer unit that sends power from the 9-speed automatic transmission to the rear-drive module via a three-piece driveshaft. The rear-drive module has an electronically controlled wet clutch that manages how much torque goes to the rear wheels.
What else make the Pacifica AWD Launch Edition different?
In addition to its advanced AWD system and Chrysler’s handy Stow ‘n Go second-row seating, the Pacifica Launch Edition has black exterior accents on its grille and headlight trim. It also rides about an inch higher than the standard Pacifica, and it sports unique badging and 18-inch alloy wheels. On the inside, the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen radio is complemented by black leather seats with gray stitching.
How much is the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition?
The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition, based on the Touring L model, has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $40,240, plus a destination fee of $1,495. Available options include a three-panel panoramic sunroof, a navigation system, and a tow package. We expect this new AWD Pacifica to arrive at U.S. dealers by this fall.
