A used car is often cheaper than purchasing a new car since most new cars lose up to 35% of their value after three years. Buying a used car from a dealer is a safer option than purchasing from a private owner as it may come with an extended warranty. If you don’t purchase an extended warranty, make sure you research the car’s reliability and ownership costs. When buying a used car, you may want to get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report. You may want to consider buying a CPO car, or “Certified Pre-Owned” that is fully inspected and backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Most car shoppers end up with a monthly car payment by financing the car with a loan from a bank or credit union, although some buyers opt for an "all cash" option. Either way, make sure you can afford the car you buy. Whether you are looking for a cheap car for sale, a used car for sale under $5,000, a used truck under $10,000, a SUV or minivan with 3rd row seating, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), an electric car, a SUV, a vehicle with a V6 or V8, a AWD/4WD vehicle, a car with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, or a truck, at Autotrader we make the car buying process easy and stress-free.

If you’re wondering how to buy a used car, we’ve outlined the key steps below.

Get the trade-in value for your current car to determine what kind of budget you'll have for a used vehicle.
Get pre-approved for financing (if applicable). How much you can afford and how much of a down payment you can apply, will impact your monthly car payment.
Once approved, start shopping for a used car near you.
Consider a certified pre-owned car that has been inspected and serviced to meet strict standards set by the automaker. You may even consider leasing vs. buying a car.
Look at the vehicle history report (VHR), which will provide important information such as any accidents or previous owners, as well as maintenance and service records. A good VHR can help ensure that you’re buying a reliable car.
Once you’ve decided on a car, reach out to the seller and ask key questions about the car.
A test drive is one of the most important steps in buying a used car, as it will give you a better idea of its condition and performance so that you can make an informed decision.
A pre-purchase inspection is always recommended when buying a used car as this will provide further assurance of its condition before you buy.
Once everything checks out, it’s time to negotiate the best deal. Make sure you read and understand all documents before signing them, as this will protect your rights as the buyer.
