The 2022 Land Rover Discovery offers authentic Land Rover off-road ability in a rig that can haul the family. Prices start in the mid $50,000 range, though a well-equipped R-Dynamic model can catapult that figure to $75,000 quicker than you can say A Night at the Disco. Disco, by the way, is the nickname given to the Discovery by Land Rover enthusiasts and pithy automotive journalists.
Given the generous list of standard equipment and the numerous individual options, the entry-level Discovery S is probably more than sufficient. However, the R-Dynamic trims open the door to a more powerful engine and other goodies. Still, some may prefer more modern and luxurious offerings from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and even Volvo at this price level.
What we like best about the Discovery is the way Land Rover allows its customers to customize each trim, even the base model. That’s rare in these days of pre-packaged models that force buyers into more expensive trims to get the features they want. Find a Land Rover Discovery for sale
2022 Land Rover Discovery S (Starting at $53,900)
Stylistically there isn’t all that much difference between the Discovery S and its more expensive trims, short of some exterior styling cues and wheel upgrades, some of which you’ll have the option of adding to the S.
The Discovery S offers only one engine choice: a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It’s coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, full-time intelligent all-wheel-drive, and a single-speed transfer case.
The Discovery’s suspension is air-cushioned and tied to Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. The driver has the ability to adjust settings from the suspension, throttle, and all-wheel-drive system. The Discovery’s adaptive suspension continually monitors road conditions and adjusts the shocks to keep the ride smooth and the wheels firmly planted.
Looking at the exterior, we see the Discovery rides on 20-inch wheels and features LED headlights, keyless entry, rear privacy glass, and a rear wiper/washer.
Seating inside the Discovery S is a 3-row affair, with a standard, somewhat snug 2-person third-row seat. Leather upholstery is standard, as are 14-way power-adjustable front seats and power-folding 60/40 second-row seats with power recline. Dual-zone automatic climate control helps keep the cabin comfortable, or you can opt to open the panoramic glass sunroof and let nature do all the work.
A 12.3-inch interactive digital display replaces the traditional analog speedometer and tachometer. It can also display other essential functions such as navigation routing and power distribution to the wheels when off-roading or status updates.
Luxury touches include a power-adjustable steering column, a power-operated liftgate, power-folding heated electric side mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers. The Discovery’s windshield is designed to reflect heat, helping keep the dash and seat a bit cooler on hot, sunny days.
The Discovery’s standard infotainment consists of an 11.4-inch touchscreen and the Pivi Pro system introduced last year. This new software delivers faster response times and more intuitive menus, a big bone of contention on previous Land Rover infotainment systems. The system contains navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, streaming Bluetooth capability, and a 180-watt 8-speaker audio system.
Power points are plentiful, with a 12-volt socket in the glove box, another in the center console, and two in the second-row seat. There are multiple USB ports in all three rows.
The Discovery is pretty complete on the safety and driver-assist front, with several option packages to add more features such as adaptive cruise control, which is standard on some competitors.
The Discovery comes with low-speed automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic assists, clear exit monitor, lane-keep assist, and trailer stability assist. Also standard are a surround-view monitor, parking aid, a driver condition monitor, and Land Rover’s Wade Sensing that can gauge the depth of water when traversing streams or deep puddles.
Optional equipment for the Discovery is plentiful. The more notable upgrades include the Cold Climate Pack (heated windshield, washer jets, and steering wheel), Hot Climate Pack (cooled front console compartment and 4-zone climate control), wireless charging pad, adaptive cruise control, auto high beams, and a head-up display.
Also optional are 18-way heated front seats, heated second and third-row seats, power-folding third-row seats, and massaging fronts seats, partial operation of which is controlled through the Pivi Pro touchscreen. A powered gesture tailgate, inner power tailgate, and Active Key bracelet that replaces a traditional key fob are also available.
Land Rover provides two Meridian sound system upgrades, one with 12 speakers and 400-watts, and the other with 14-speakers and 700-watts.
With destination, the Discovery S cost $55,250. On a 60-month loan at 3%, the monthly payment comes to $993. Find a Land Rover Discovery S for sale
2022 Land Rover Discovery S includes:
- Terrain Response — allows various settings, including Auto, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand, and Rock Crawl. Each setting allows the all-wheel-drive system, transmission, and throttle to maximize traction and control based on the differing terrain selected.
- Automatic emergency braking — in low-speed situations this system can detect a possible collision and warn the driver to slow down. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system can bring the vehicle to stop.
- Panoramic glass roof — this large sliding glass panel lets natural light into the cabin and includes a gesture-activated power sunshade.
- Wade Sensing — employs sensors in the side mirrors to detect water depth around the vehicle and display it on the 11.4-inch touchscreen.
2022 Land Rover Discovery R-Dynamic S ($56,400)
One step up from the Discovery S, the R-Dynamic S brings a few more interior and exterior visual upgrades and the option for the more powerful 355-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. Moving to the 3.0-liter engine also gets a 2-speed transfer case.
The R-Dynamic S and Discovery S have the same standard and optional equipment list.
With destination, the Discovery R-Dynamic S lists for $57,750, while the same model with the 3.0-liter engine sells for $63,250. Assuming a 60-month loan financed at 3%, the monthly payment comes to $1,038, or about $45 more than the S. Adding the 3.0-liter engine bumps the monthly payment to $1,137. 2022 Land Rover Discovery R-Dynamic HSE ($68,900)
The HSE is the top Discovery trim and, as expected, has many of the R-Dynamic S’ optional features as standard. That includes the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine and 2-speed transfer case.
Among the more notable upgrades are 22-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free tailgate that activates when sweeping one’s foot at either side of the rear bumper, an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, auto high beams, and power washers for the Premium LED headlights.
Driver and passenger enjoy 20-way power-adjustable heated and cooled front seats, heated second-row seats, and power-folding third-row seats. Upholstery is Windsor leather in two tones.
The 700-watt, 14-speaker Meridian sound system comes with HSE trim, as does adaptive cruise control with steering assist.
Above the options listed for the R-Dynamic S, the HSE offers the Advanced Off-Road Capability Package (Terrain Response 2, All-Terrain Progress Control, and Configurable Terrain Response), heated and cooled rear seats, massaging front seats, and an active rear locking differential.
With no options and just the $1,350 destination charge, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery R-Dynamic HSE comes to $70,280. On a 60-month loan at 3%, the monthly payment is $1,263, a hefty $126 more a month than the R-Dynamic S 3.0. Find a Land Rover Discovery R-Dynamic HSE for sale
The 2022 Land Rover Discovery R-Dynamic HSE includes:
- 20-way adjustable power front seats — the 20-way adjustment allow maximum comfort, as does the standard heated and cooling feature.
- 700-watt Meridian audio — This unique system includes 14 strategically placed speakers and a dual-channel subwoofer for the ultimate in-car audio.
- Available active rear locking differential — allows power transfer to whichever rear wheel has the best traction, helpful when ascending a steep snow-covered driveway or crawling up a rugged off-road trail.
- Available massaging front seats — help reduce fatigue on long drives by gently massaging critical points on the occupant’s back and thighs.
