2024 Ram HD: Choosing the Right Trim

When a full-size Ram 1500 just isn’t enough truck, we present the ground-pounding 2024 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. These heavy-duty trucks excel in towing, hauling, and generally showing off. They are engineered for serious work, yet they know how to play. You know, like towing a boat or travel trailer. When appropriately outfitted and powered by the high-output Cummins turbodiesel 6-cylinder engine, the Ram 3500 can tug up to 37,090 pounds.

For every Ram HD, the base engine is a gas-fueled 6.4-liter Hemi V8 rated at a class-leading 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Drivers hunting for more towing muscle will be interested in the available 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-6. The standard output generates 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. The high-output option available for the 3500 model produces 420 hp and a whopping 1,075 lb-ft of torque.

The Rebel and Power Wagon are exclusive to the 2500. No matter the trim level, Ram offers a dizzying array of options and packages to make that 2500 or 3500 truck truly yours. You can pick among three cab configurations (Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and the even larger Mega Cab). Ram offers two box lengths: 8-foot and 6-foot-4-inches. Not every cab and cargo box configuration is available for each of the seven trim levels. Representing the competition, the Chevrolet Silverado HD and Ford Super Duty are credible workhorses as well.

What’s New:

For all intents and purposes, the 2024 Ram 2500/3500 HD trucks are carried over from last year. The only change is the “Tailgate Ajar” warning lamp has been made standard across the board.

Our Recommendation:

Unless you need to tow heavy loads, consider the Ram 1500. However, if towing is your thing, the Ram Big Horn makes a lot of sense as the best value. On the other hand, if your truck is going to double as a family hauler, the Laramie has more luxury, comfort, and convenience features.

The pricing listed here is for the rear-wheel-drive Regular Cab Tradesman with the long cargo box. As its name implies, the Tradesman trim is a basic, no-nonsense work truck. As such, it has durable vinyl floors and seats, manual windows, manual door locks, and steel wheels. A Tradesman Level 1 Group adds some appreciated features like heated power tow mirrors, plus other niceties like active noise control, an overhead console, power windows, power locks, and remote keyless entry. A Level 2 Group adds cloth seats, carpeted floors, a front armrest with cupholders, a sliding rear window, and SiriusXM.

You can also get adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, forward emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more with the Safety Group option package available throughout the 2500/3500 trim lineups.

The Tradesman is also available in the crew cab configuration and offers optional 4-wheel drive.

2024 Ram 2500 Big Horn: $59,730; Ram 3500 Big Horn: $67,350

Note: The Big Horn is called the Lone Star if you’re in Texas. Other than badging, the trucks are identical.

While the Tradesman trim likely is too spartan for most drivers, the Big Horn represents a solid value choice for the average HD truck driver. It has alloy wheels, chrome bumpers and exterior trim, cloth seats, carpeted floors, heated, power-adjustable mirrors, an overhead console, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, a trailer brake controller, and a trailer light check.

Like the Tradesman, the Big Horn is available with Level 1 and Level 2 equipment groups. Level 1 adds premium cloth seating, an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa, more interior lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power telescoping mirrors.

Level 2 adds more upgrades like dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch driver information screen, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, LED taillights, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, remote start, and universal garage door opener.

A couple of appearance groups are also available, namely the Night Edition and Sport Appearance Package.

After adding the $1,995 factory destination fee, the total price for the Ram 2500 Big Horn is $61,725. Using our $0 down financing scenario, the monthly payment would be about $1,165. See 2024 Ram 2500 Big Horn models and 2024 Ram 3500 Big Horn models for sale

Chrome trim — Chrome bumpers and chrome exterior trim add an upscale look to the Big Horn.

Creature comforts — The Big Horn comes with many basic niceties not standard in the Tradesman, such as power windows, power locks, and cloth seating.

Trailer brake controller — This feature is a must if you regularly tow trailers equipped with brakes.

2024 Ram 2500 Laramie: $69,455; Ram 3500 Laramie: $80,215:

2024 Ram 2500 Rebel: $71,735

Available only as the 2500 class with a Crew Cab, 6-foot-4 bed, and 4WD, the Rebel diverges from the first three trims and their progressive levels of content to focus more on off-road prowess. The Rebel (and the even more off-road capable Power Wagon) loses some of Laramie’s content but picks up off-roading features. For example, an electronic locking limited-slip rear differential, Bilstein gas-charged shocks, and 20-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires are standard. Moreover, Ram tuned the suspension for improved off-roading capability.

Other standard 2024 Ram 2500 Rebel features include front bucket seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Mopar Sport Performance Hood, and power-adjustable pedals. Front bucket seats, LED exterior lights (headlights, taillights, and fog lights), and integrated turn signals on the exterior mirrors make the cut, too. Tow hooks and rear in-floor storage are also included.

Ram still offers the optional Levels 1 and Level 2 Equipment groups and the Safety Group.

Including the $1,995 factory delivery charge, the 2024 Ram 2500 Rebel totals $73,730. On a 60-month loan with 5% interest and $0 down, the monthly payment is $1,391. See 2024 Ram 2500 Rebel models for sale

2024 Ram 2500 Rebel includes:

Dual-zone automatic climate control — A set-and-forget system divides the vehicle into left and right regions, providing separate temperature settings for each zone. Once set, it automatically maintains the preset temperatures.

Power-adjustable pedals — These help you find exactly the ideal driving position, whether you’re short or tall.

Locking rear differential — This electronically locking rear differential pays tremendous dividends off-road.

2024 Ram 2500 Power Wagon: $71,835

The Power Wagon is the most capable off-roader in the Ram HD lineup and is only available in the Crew Cab/short bed configuration with 4WD. Building on the 2500 Rebel with a 4.10:1 axle ratio, the 2024 Ram Power Wagon has electronic locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting sway bars, a Warn winch, and 17-inch black wheels with all-terrain tires.

Other standard gear includes remote start, a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, a universal garage door opener, and illuminated vanity mirrors.

The Level 1 Equipment Group gains a 12-inch touchscreen, proximity keyless entry, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and much more. Level 2 includes a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a leather-wrapped grab handle, and more to add even more content.

After adding the $1,995 factory destination fee, the total price for the Ram 2500 Power Wagon begins at $78,830. Assuming a 60-month loan at 5% interest with $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $1,393. See 2024 Ram 2500 Power Wagon models for sale
