2024 Volkswagen ID.4: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 comes in a wide range of trims and prices, creating a lineup that allows buyers to prioritize their needs.

The electric ID.4 offers a choice of two lithium-ion battery packs. The base Standard and S trims use a 62-kilowatt-hour battery and a single rear-mounted electric motor, giving them the lowest range and prices. When so equipped, the ID.4 can travel up to 206 miles on a single charge.

The Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus all come with a more powerful 82-kWh battery and upgraded electric motor, extending the range to an EPA-estimated 291 miles or 263 when equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), featuring dual electric motors.

The ID.4 isn’t the only electric SUV in this price range; buyers can also look at the Hyundai Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Nissan Ariya.

The ID.4 has two significant advantages worth considering. First, the “Made in the USA” label (built at VW’s Tennessee assembly plant) qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Second, every Volkswagen ID.4 comes with 500 kWh of charging and three years of Electrify America Pass+ membership perks, which include savings of up to 25% on charging.

What’s New:

The Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus get a more powerful drive unit, creating more horsepower and extending the range. These models also receive a new 12.9-inch display with backlit sliders, a revised climate control interface, and updated infotainment menus. The Plus models get a new Harman Kardon audio system and 21-inch wheel designs.

Our Recommendation:

If you can live with its shorter range and don’t care about AWD, the new Volkswagen ID.4 Standard will probably fulfill your needs. If, however, you need more range and want AWD, the Pro is the way to go. Both the Standard and the Pro are similarly equipped. Picking the Pro is about more range, AWD, and quicker acceleration.

These are the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and include the $1,425 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge). Prices are current at the time of publishing.

2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard: $41,160

The Standard model’s low price comes at something other than the expense of equipment and features; it costs in range. Equipped with the smaller 62-kWh battery, the Standard musters a mere 201 horsepower and has an estimated range of 206 miles.

The Volkswagen ID.4 Standard features 19-inch alloy wheels and exterior LED lights (auto on-off headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights), rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles, and proximity keyless entry with push-button start. It has illuminated flush door handles, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and deep-tinted rear privacy glass.

The Standard’s cabin includes cloth/leatherette seating, manually adjustable heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The driver gets a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with touch controls for the audio, cruise, and displays.

Rear seat passengers sit on a 60/40-split fold-flat rear seat and enjoy rear air vents.

Entertaining them falls to an infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen, navigation, a 7-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth. VW has integrated wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adding four USB-C ports, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi hot spot capability.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive safety bundle leads off the ID.4’s long list of driver-aid technologies. It includes lane-keeping assistance with steering, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and traffic sign recognition. Park Assist and Travel Assist are also part of the package. The automaker supplements IQ.Drive features with high-beam assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and front/rear park assist. Blind-spot monitoring with steering and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, as well.

Volkswagen doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the Standard trim.

Park Assist – This active parking system helps the driver with parallel and perpendicular parking.

2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro: $46,300 (RWD); $50,180 (AWD)

The Pro sees a few system upgrades, such as a larger 12.9-inch display screen with backlit sliders, an adjustable cargo area floor, and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control.

Besides the upgrades mentioned above, the only real difference between the Standard and Pro is the Pro’s larger battery, increased range, and 170-kW DC fast charging capability.

Opting for all-wheel drive adds dual electric motors, more horsepower, a heated windshield, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a trailer hitch with up to 2,700 pounds of towing capacity.

Volkswagen tosses in a 30-color ambient interior lighting package, memory for the driver’s seat and side mirrors, second-row center armrest with cupholders, and a rear-seat cargo pass-through.

There are no factory-installed options.

Surround-view camera – It provides a 360-degree bird’s-eye view around the vehicle. This perspective is helpful when parking.

Tri-zone automatic climate control – Separating the vehicle into three areas (front right, front left, and rear) allows occupants to set the temperatures in each zone. It then automatically maintains those preset temperatures.

Power-folding mirrors – Electronically controlled, these mirrors can fold against the sides of the vehicle with the push of a button. Furthermore, you can set them so they automatically fold when the ignition is turned off and then back to their functioning position when the ignition is engaged.
