At Pebble Beach Automotive Week, Mercedes-Benz's presence is certainly geared toward the appreciation of the finest vintage automobiles. Its Historical Tribute to SL includes a display of three 1952 Mercedes sports cars. Mercedes also pays tribute to the 45th anniversary of AMG, its performance group, but does so with more modern iron. The Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series, SLS AMG Coupe and all-new SL63 AMG are all on display. Meanwhile, providing a look toward Mercedes's future is the Concept Style Coupe.
The C63 AMG Black Series is the most powerful C-Class Mercedes ever. The 510-horsepower rocket packs a high-revving 6.2-liter V8 and can blast from 0-60 mph in an estimated 4.2 seconds. Black Series cars, in limited production since 2006, represent the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz and AMG performance. The C63 Black Series is stuffed with motorsports-grade equipment including 19-inch wheels; sticky, staggered-width tires; and race-spec brakes with six-piston calipers up front.
The SLS AMG Coupe also boasts the AMG-built 6.2 liter V8, but in the gullwing coupe, the motor makes a staggering 563 hp and 479 lb-ft torque. With its long nose and passenger cabin positioned toward the rear of the vehicle, the big V8 in the SLS is mounted closer to the center of the vehicle for better weight distribution. The SLS AMG Coupe is capable of reaching 197 mph.
With a completely redesigned sixth-generation SL roadster arriving for the 2013 model year, it only makes sense that AMG would offer the new SL63 AMG to complement it. For this application, AMG chose a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 producing 530 hp, or if that's not enough, 557 hp with the optional AMG Performance package. An all-aluminum body and extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber makes the new SL63 275-lbs lighter than its predecessor. It may be the perfect car for the driver that likes the Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series but prefers top-down motoring.
The Concept Style Coupe, which debuted earlier this year at the Auto China show, is a sleek 4-door concept with a distinctive panoramic roof. Unlike the AMG vehicles, the Concept Style Coupe has a more mainstream 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine, but it packs a host of high-tech connectivity features like the cloud-based COMAND Online system, which keeps occupants connected, even when the car is switched off.
If Pebble Beach is all about vintage cars, what automaker is better suited to represent the look back? Mercedes-Benz is the world's oldest car manufacturer, and one of its founders, Karl Benz, is generally credited with inventing the automobile. But the lineup of stunning classics, the latest AMG high-performance machines and the futuristic Concept Style Coupe show it all--the past, present and future of Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
What it means to you: For the 45th anniversary of AMG, Mercedes shows that its performance division is capable of building world-class luxury sports cars with a handful of fine examples.
