- BMW's sporty i8 plug-in hybrid starts at $136,650 with shipping
- Three packages will be offered: Pure Impulse World, Tera World and Giga World
- BMW says the i8 officially goes on sale in August
Pricing for the upcoming BMW i8 will officially start at $136,650 including destination when the plug-in hybrid sports car goes on sale later this summer. That's the latest from BMW, which also released options pricing for the sporty i8 ahead of the sleek coupe's on-sale date.
According to BMW, the i8 will offer three major option packages, each carrying an unusual name in keeping with the i8's futuristic plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The most expensive is the Pure Impulse World package, which will be installed on 90 percent of early i8 models. Priced at $10,800, the package features a wide range of equipment, such as gray leather upholstery, blue seat belts, a leather trunk cover, leather-lined floor mats, black brake calipers and LED headlights.
Shoppers looking to keep things a little simpler can opt for the $3,000 Tera World package, which will account for the remaining 10 percent of launch models. That package includes 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and blue seat belts. The least expensive is the Giga World model, which adds $2,000 to the i8's base price and offers only the wheels and lights. It won't appear on any early models, though drivers who specify their own i8 will be able to order it. Interestingly, it's not yet known whether an i8 can be ordered without one of the three packages.
Beyond announcing prices for the i8's packages, BMW also revealed the cost of some of the coupe's most desirable colors. According to the automaker, shoppers will have to pay an extra $1,800 to get Crystal White Pearl Metallic, Frozen Grey or BMW i Blue. Pricing for other colors has not yet been announced.
While the i8's option prices might seem high, the coupe's base price also includes a long list of standard features. The automaker says that the i8 will include park distance control, heated seats, automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon sound system and dynamic damper control for improved handling. The i8 also includes a complicated plug-in hybrid drivetrain, featuring a 231-horsepower 3-cylinder engine for the rear wheels and a 131-hp electric motor up front -- good for about 20 miles of fully electric driving when charged.
What it means to you: The BMW i8 won't be cheap -- and neither will its options.
