If you’re looking for a really rare wagon that’s fast, you’re probably considering all the usual suspects: an older Audi S4 Avant, a Volvo 850R Wagon or maybe a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon. But if you’re looking for something newer than the Volvo and the Audi and a bit more budget-friendly than the E63, you might want to consider a 2016 V60 Polestar.
Now, the V60 Polestar wasn’t only made in 2016 — in fact, Volvo also offered it in 2017 and 2018, and the V60 has been redesigned for the 2019 model year with a new Polestar high-performance version on the way. But the 2016 model is extra special, because it’s the only year it ever came with a 6-cylinder engine.
Here’s the basic breakdown: the V60 came to North America for the 2015 model year, and the top-end version was called the R-Design, which had a 325-horsepower turbo 6-cylinder engine. In 2016, the Polestar arrived as a new high-performance version slotted above the R-Design — and it used a more powerful version of the 6-cylinder, touting 345 hp and an impressive 369 lb-ft of torque. It was a fast wagon for fast wagon fans.
For 2017, however, things changed: the 6-cylinder was eliminated. Instead, Volvo gave Polestar models a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the same engine used in other V60 models, with extra power. The Polestar had 362 horses, more than before, but torque dropped to 347 lb-ft — and you could feel the change. The Polestar was still fast, and it was still cool, but it wasn’t the same as the 2016 model.
The Polestar and its powerful 4-cylinder continued for the 2018 model year, and a new one is on the horizon — but it’ll surely have the 4-cylinder. Fast wagon fans looking for the best V60, therefore, can set their sights on the 2016 model as sort of a rare, single-year, cream-of-the-crop version, as it’s the rarest, and has the largest engine and the most torque. Indeed, it’s so rare that there are only a handful of 2016 V60 Polestar models currently listed for sale on Autotrader.
But if you’re a fan of fast wagons, you know all about rarity — and you know this is probably the V60 for you. Find a Volvo V60 for sale
