You’re currently looking at a 1998 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas that looks a lot like every other 1998 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas, with one exception: this one has covered 398,000 miles since it was sold new. That’s right: this isn’t your typical Jaguar XJ that’s been lightly used because the owner feared it would become expensive to own. This one has been driven as much as possible.
On the outside, this ’98 XJ certainly looks like a typical Jaguar from the late 1990s, with a nice, well-kept exterior that doesn’t show any major issues. The interior almost seems to be even nicer: The rear seats look basically unused, and the front seats don’t seem to show the kind of wear you’d associate with a 400,000-mile vehicle. In fact, just looking at the photos, you’d think there was no way this asking price could be correct, as this XJ is being offered by One and Only Motors in the Atlanta suburbs for just $1,999.
But then you glance at the odometer. This XJ was sold new in late 1997, and the first owner kept it for just two years, accumulating only 19,000 miles in the process. The second owner had it from September 1999 until October 2017, bringing the odometer from 19,000 to nearly 400,000. Service records reported to Carfax are spotty, suggesting it’s likely this XJ was getting serviced at an independent mechanic — though a 2009 service record at AAMCO Transmissions might indicate a new transmission at around 280,000 miles.
Still, it’s a top-level Vanden Plas model with a well-kept interior and exterior — and $1,999 seems like a screaming deal, assuming that it runs and drives for at least a little longer. Of course, if it doesn’t, you can always use it as an office, sitting in the plush leather and enjoying the fold-down wood trays in back. Find a used Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas for sale
