Welcome to another round of Ask Doug, your favorite segment here on Oversteer, where Doug answers your questions every Friday -- unless, of course, your questions are rambling and incoherent. Doug will not accept rambling incoherence, because he reserves that for himself. Apparently, he also writes in the third person.

If you'd like to participate in Ask Doug, you can! Just e-mail me at OversteerDoug@gmail.com, and I will consider answering your question here on Oversteer, though I admit there is some possibility I will instead laugh at you.

Anyway, today's question comes to us from a reader I've named Chester, who writes:

Hi Doug,

Just a question that I'm not sure you've answered before: Can you post a list of every car that you've ever owned and driven, starting back to when you first got your driver license? I just read the car spotting article in Automobile Magazine and learned that you drove a 2001 Audi while in college. I started wondering what tasteful -- and distasteful -- cars you've owned through the years.

 Take care,

 Chester

Although I generally prefer to use Ask Doug to answer questions about general cars and the car industry, I get asked a lot to provide a list of all the cars I've owned -- so I've decided to do that, right here, where it will be preserved in perpetuity. Then, in the future when someone asks me this question, I can send them a link to this post, and I will get one more view. Mwahahahaha...

So, without further ado, here's the list of all the past cars I've owned, in order, since I first got my driver's license at age 16:

1996 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan
2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro sedan
2007 Volkswagen GTI
1995 Toyota Land Cruiser
2001 Ford Explorer Sport
1998 BMW M3 sedan
2001 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E
2006 Lotus Elise
2004 Cadillac CTS-V
2002 Mercedes-Benz G500
2001 Porsche 911 Turbo coupe
2007 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon
1995 Range Rover Classic
2006 Range Rover
2001 Toyota Prius
2009 Nissan Cube
2011 Cadillac CTS-V wagon
2004 Ferrari 360 Modena coupe
1995 AM General Hummer wagon
1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R
2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage coupe
1997 Dodge Viper GTS
1989 Nissan S-Cargo
???? Next DougCar

Now, before you make too much fun of me for some of these, allow me to explain a few of my choices. The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport and the 2009 Nissan Cube were hand-me-downs from my brother, who pawned them off on me when he no longer needed them. He now drives a 2008 Nissan Xterra that hasn't been washed since the invention of Snapchat. Additionally, the 2001 Toyota Prius was sold to me for virtually nothing by a friend who was moving to Manhattan. I quickly flipped it for a small profit on Craigslist.

As for the other cars, well, I chose them all -- each and every one of them, except in cases where you chose them (the Ferrari 360, Hummer, Skyline GT-R, V8 Vantage and Viper GTS). My very first car was that 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan, which I got in September 2004 as I entered my junior year of high school. That car proved so unreliable that my parents got me a different car for college: the 2001 Audi A4 referenced by Chester in today's question. When the A4's transmission failed in 2010, my parents got me that 2007 GTI (3-door!) as a college graduation present -- and I've purchased every subsequent car on my own.

In some cases, these cars were rather unfortunate decisions. I only owned the 2002 Mercedes G-Wagen for a month or two before I realized it was so rusty underneath that I had to get rid of it. Recently, it was involved in a rather dramatic accident in the Tampa area. I also offloaded the 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser after only a couple of months, because it was on its last legs with 237,000 miles. It's now in West Africa.

A few cars have given me better memories than others. I drove my 2006 Lotus Elise across the country, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Atlanta, with my mom (from Las Vegas to Denver) and my best friend Joe (Denver to Atlanta) on an unforgettable trip that I hope to never repeat. I loved my E55 AMG and my 911 Turbo. Meanwhile, I don't remember much about my first-generation CTS-V, except that it was a competent but rather dull car.

As for the car I've owned the longest, that would be my current Range Rover: I bought it in December 2012, the same day I decided to quit my job and try out "this whole car writing thing," and it's been with me every single step of the way since then -- about four-and-a-half years (and 54,000 miles) as of this writing.

Finally, a few numbers: I've owned eight German cars, five American cars, five Japanese cars, four British cars, one Swedish car and an Italian car, for a total of 24 vehicles. Of my 24 cars, nine have been manual (out of a possible 12, since the other 12 weren't offered with a stick shift).

And here's one final interesting fact you may not have known about me: I try to always buy my cars in the automaker's "press color" that was used for advertisements and press launches. It's how I ended up with a green Range Rover Classic, a blue and white Viper GTS, a red Ferrari 360, a silver Mercedes G-Wagen and an orange Lotus Elise. Interestingly, as I sit here writing this, I'm about to go take delivery of car number 25, the next DougCar, which is also painted in the "press color." More details on that one in the next couple of weeks.
