Here’s something you probably didn’t realize: In Australia, the Chevy Colorado isn’t just sold as a pickup truck, but also as an off-road-capable SUV. Forget the Equinox or the Traverse — General Motors is building a Toyota 4Runner competitor, and they’re keeping it from us. See the Chevrolet Colorado models for sale near you
In Australia, the Chevrolet Colorado SUV is dubbed the Holden Colorado, as Holden is the name of the General Motors arm down under. And it’s exactly as you’d expect: a Chevy Colorado pickup, except with a smaller SUV body. This wouldn’t normally excite me, except there are a bunch of YouTube videos of this thing off-roading in Australia, and oh man is it capable.
Here’s why: The Holden Colorado SUV benefits from the regular Chevrolet Colorado pickup’s narrow design and high ground clearance, and it also features a 4-wheel-drive system with low range. It seems to be able to plow through just about anything you’d want. And it even has an available diesel engine for maximum torque so you can conserve those mpg’s when you’re driving through the brush.
I’m a little bummed that the Holden Colorado SUV doesn’t come to the States, because I, for one, miss the Nissan Xterra, and I think the Toyota 4Runner — with a base price of $35,000 with shipping — has gotten a little too expensive for most of us. Wouldn’t the Colorado be a wonderful addition to the market for people who still want a bare-bones off-roader?
Answer: Probably not, because if General Motors could’ve made money on this thing by selling it in the States, I have no doubt they would’ve. But it’s fun to dream. Find a Chevrolet Colorado for sale
