If you’ve ever wanted to know which car dealer is the world’s largest, here’s your answer: It’s a dealership called Longo Toyota, it’s located in El Monte, California (in the Los Angeles area), and it’s truly, unbelievably, absurdly massive. How massive? The only good photos of it are from the air. It has something like 120 service bays. And it includes a Subway restaurant.
But, most importantly, it sells an enormous number of cars. Part of the Penske Group and spread out over 50 acres, Longo Toyota sells — I am not exaggerating this figure — somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 to 30,000 cars per year. From one dealership, from one location in Southern California. There’s a press release online from a few years back where Longo says they’re going to try and break 5,000 sales a month. A MONTH! Back when I worked for Porsche Cars North America, 5,000 sales would’ve been a huge month for our entire nationwide dealer body of nearly 200 stores. And these Longo people are selling that many IN ONE MONTH!!!!
Here’s how big it is: Not only does it have a Subway restaurant, but it also has a Starbucks, a Verizon store (seriously!), two Enterprise Rent-a-Car locations and a AAA office. There’s also an on-site gym and a full-time "Wellness Coach," who works "to promote the overall well-being of the staff." I can only imagine applying for a new job having previously worked as a car dealership fitness coach. How do you explain that one?!
The reason I bring this up is that I find most people — including most Southern California people — have no idea of the sheer volume of this place, except that they’ve seen a few "LONGO TOYOTA" license plate frames around the L.A. area.
I suspect Longo Toyota still sells more cars than all of Porsche in the U.S., and it certainly outsells lower-volume brands like Maserati and Aston Martin. Remember, this is one dealership. But despite this insanity, there’s not much talk of Longo: It has no Wikipedia page, there’s not much about it on the web, and aside from a few television appearances here and there, you’d never know this is the world’s largest car dealer. But now you do. Find a Toyota for sale
