The 2011 Lincoln MKX is a midsized luxury crossover SUV big on comfort, technology and efficiency. Based on the popular Ford Edge, the MKX thinly disguises its roots with a bold split-wing Lincoln grille, elegant elongated taillights and large chrome wheels. Inside, the MKX features Lincoln's best technology, including a configurable LCD instrument cluster known as MyLincoln Touch. There's also the SYNC voice-controlled audio system and numerous luxury touches, such as an available panoramic glass moonroof and heated and ventilated front seats. Underneath the MKX's smooth skin are a modern 305-horsepower V6, a compliant suspension and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive (AWD) option.

Of course, the MKX faces some fairly stiff competition in the used market. The Lexus RX 350 has a more refined interior and better resale value, as does the Acura MDX. The Audi Q5 can be had with a more fuel-efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and the BMW X5 is a far better performance SUV that offers numerous engine choices, including a V8 and diesel-powered V6. However, the MKX's trump card is its amazing standard feature list and middle-of-the-road resale value. For buyers, this unusual combination permits one to get a lot of luxury features in a vehicle costing significantly less than its rivals.

What We Like

Strong V6; decent fuel economy; long list of luxury features; good safety scores; roomy rear seat; smooth ride

What We Don't

MyLincoln Touch can be problematic; no diesel or hybrid option; obvious Ford roots somewhat diminish luxury-brand cache

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

Power for the 2011 Lincoln MKX comes from a single source: a 3.7-liter V6. Rated at 305 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, this engine is teamed with a dual-clutch SelectShift 6-speed automatic transmission. Power flows to the MKX's front wheels but can be routed to all four with the optional AWD setup. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates for the front-wheel-drive (FWD) MKX are 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. When equipped with AWD, those figures drop to 17 mpg city/23 mpg hwy.

Standard Features & Options

There is only one trim level for the Lincoln MKX, and it comes very well equipped. A number of upgrade packages were offered in 2011, adding even more equipment.

Standard on every MKX are heated and ventilated front seats, full leather seating, 10-way power front seats with power lumbar support, auto headlights, rear parking sensors, a power rear lift gate, dual-zone automatic climate control with fingertip swipe control, 18-inch alloy wheels, Intelligent Access with push-button starting and keypad entry, a MyKey programmable key fob, auto-dimming side mirrors, a 10-speaker AM/FM stereo with a 6-disc CD changer and USB/iPod input, the SYNC voice-activated audio and communication system, MyLincoln Touch, a tilt-telescopic steering column and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls for cruise, audio and Bluetooth cellphone connectivity. Standard safety features include traction control with Roll Stability Control (RSC) and six airbags, including front, seat-mounted side and side-curtain bags with rollover detection.

The Premium package brings adaptive HID headlights, a rear backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, a power tilt-telescopic steering column, premium leather seating and heated outboard second-row seats.

The Elite package adds even more equipment, including 20-in wheels, a 600-watt 14-speaker THX audio system, hard-drive-based navigation with voice-control technology in three languages, a blind spot monitoring system and a panoramic glass moonroof.

Stand-alone options include adaptive cruise control, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, AWD, a trailer tow package and upgraded wheel and interior color choices.

Pricing

The 2011 MKX holds only average 5-year residual values on par with the Cadillac SRX but below the Lexus RX 350, BMW X5 and Acura MDX. This means that, comparatively speaking, you can get a great price on a low-mileage model. To get a good idea of the MKX's price range, we suggest checking the used-car values at KBB.com. You can also search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are currently for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the following recalls for the 2011 MKX:

A recall was issued regarding a possible problem with the body control module (BCM) that could cause a short and lead to a potential fire.

Another recall was issued for the BCM after the equipment used to diagnose faulty modules from the first recall may have missed some of the affected units.

A recall was issued for a possible problem that disables the locking function for the rear lift gate.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you. You can also check the NHTSA website; simply enter your vehicle's identification number for a list of performed recall repairs.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

In 2011, the Lincoln MKX earned three out of five stars in the NHTSA front-end crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the MKX top scores in all of its crash tests and rated it a Top Safety Pick for 2011.

The MKX left the factory with a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. In addition to the new-vehicle warranty, second owners can purchase extended coverage when they buy from a certified pre-owned (CPO) Lincoln dealership. CPO vehicles come with a 169-point inspection and a 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty starting from the time the vehicle enters service.

Other Cars to Consider

2011 Audi Q5 -- The Q5 is a more prestigious SUV, and its interior is more luxurious than the MKX. It also offers a choice between two engines, and its handling is s little sportier.

2011 Cadillac SRX -- The SRX isn't as roomy inside as the MKX, but it is every bit as luxurious. The SRX offers a few more high-tech features, but its base engine is not as powerful as the MKX's V6, and its ride is somewhat stiff.

2011 Lexus RX 350 -- The Lexus holds its value better than the MKX while offering a smoother ride and more luxury options, but the RX's strong resale value means you'll pay a lot more for a similarly equipped model. Those looking for better mileage can opt for the RX 450h hybrid version.

Autotrader's Advice

Even a base MKX with no options is a good deal. Odds are you won't find many base models on the used market, as many rolled off showrooms with at least the Premium package on board. You'll pay top dollar if you want navigation and the panoramic moonroof, two features worth having but aren't exactly must-haves. AWD is important if you live where it snows; otherwise, FWD is just fine.
