If you think of the 2015 Acura ILX as a luxurious Honda Civic, you wouldn't be too far off. The ILX is based on the Civic's design and its 2.0-liter engine in the base model. But with a starting price of $28,000 with shipping, it certainly isn't priced like a Civic. So is it worth the premium price? To find out, we spent a week behind the wheel of a 2015 ILX with a manual transmission and the optional 2.4-liter engine.

Drives Well -- Not Great

It didn't take long before we reached a conclusion about the ILX in terms of acceleration: It's no Civic. That's mostly due to the 201-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine in our test car -- a muscular optional powerplant that isn't offered in the compact Honda. Equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the engine was surprisingly spry in the ILX. Staffer comments ranged from "the car didn't feel underpowered," to "it gets up and goes very quickly" and even that it's "extremely fun to drive."

Unfortunately, we didn't reach the same conclusion about the ILX's handling. One staffer noted that it "didn't feel much different from the Civic," while another said the wind noise was "a little more than expected" from a luxury car like the ILX. While everyone felt the ILX's ride comfort, steering and handling were better than the Civic's, no one felt its revisions justified such a large price premium over the ILX's Honda stablemate.

Satisfying Interior

Like its driving experience, the ILX's interior drew mixed reviews. Some didn't think it offered luxury car levels of quality, with one staffer noting that it "looks cheap" and was "not very luxurious." Another noted that he liked the graphite-colored material used for the center stack buttons, which are a signature item on Acura models. Regardless of how you feel, there's no doubt that the ILX's interior has a lot more Honda in it than most other Acuras.

In terms of comfort, the mixed feelings returned once again. Most drivers felt that front-seat legroom was good, while space in the back was mediocre. Likewise, some staffers noticed that the rear seats were a little stiff -- and the front seats didn't quite provide as much support as you might expect from a luxury vehicle. Still, some drivers praised the leather seating for providing a comfortable feel and a high-end look.

As for equipment, the ILX is loaded -- our test car featured Bluetooth connectivity, xenon headlights, heated front seats, a sunroof, automatic headlights and more. Our staffers noticed that Bluetooth was easy to pair, though we received several complaints about the small size of the ILX's standard 5-inch infotainment screen.

Just Not a Luxury Car

Although we enjoyed our time in the 2015 Acura ILX, we didn't come away terribly impressed. It's a good car, but not a great car -- and while we liked the peppy engine, we don't think the ILX offers enough other benefits to justify its price premium over a well-equipped Honda Civic EX-L.

One staffer summed up the ILX perfectly, calling it a fun car to drive -- but not quite a step up to a luxury car. Instead, it's in an odd in-between place, combining an Acura badge and upscale equipment with Honda road manners and interior comfort. We'd rather save our money and get the Civic.
