Porsche 918 Spyder and Special Edition 911 on Display at Monterey

  • 918 Spyder on display at several venues
  • 911 50th Anniversary Edition at Pebble Beach Concours
  • Special Porsche events throughout the week

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic 911 sports car, Porsche has a busy week ahead during automotive week in Monterey, Calif. The automaker will be displaying a few of its latest, high-performance road cars as well as current and historic racing models at Monterey’s world-renowned celebrations. Attendees will get a look at its newest supercar, the Porsche 918 Spyder, plus a special 50th Anniversary Edition of the Porsche 911.

Beginning Wednesday, August 14, Porsche Zentrum at Quail Lodge will feature the entire current lineup of Porsche road cars, from the wild and track-ready, 195-miles-per-hour 911 GT3 to the plug-in Panamera S E-Hybrid. Monterey auto week attendees interested in browsing the latest Porsche cars should stop by Porsche Zentrum.

At the Quail Motorsports Gathering, Porsche will celebrate 50 years of the 911 with one of the first 911s ever sold in the U.S. displayed alongside its new 50th Anniversary Edition 911.

If racing Porsches are more your speed, don’t miss the Weissach Cup, featured at the 38th Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The special 911 class celebrates the model’s 50th anniversary with races at the famous 11-turn road course in nearby Salinas.

While at the track, be sure to check out historic Porsche racing cars on display in the garage. A 1972 Martini 911 2.1 Turbo RSR, the 1978 “Moby Dick” 935, the 1978 “Baby” 935 and two 911 GT1s will be shown at Laguna Seca before moving on to a display at the week’s main event, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Porsche’s latest GT3 Cup car will be shown at the track, as well.

As always, the Concours event really is the highlight of Monterey’s automotive week. Alongside historic racing Porsches will be the hybrid 918 Spyder. Spectators can get an up-close look at the mid-engine 2-seater supercar and its 608-horsepower V8 engine, which can rev to over 9,000 rpm. Despite its huge power, the Porsche 918 Spyder can also be thrifty, traveling up to 18 miles on electricity alone.

Plenty of privately owned Porsches will likely be on hand throughout the week, as enthusiasts of all stripes have long embraced the Porsche brand. Monterey is a must-see for any lover of historic automobiles. This year’s event is a special one for Porsche fans, as the automaker celebrates 50 years of its most famous model, the 911.

What it means to you: Monterey auto week is a bucket list item for any automobile enthusiast. If you love old cars — or Porsches, especially — be there if you can.
