Infiniti Q30 Hatchback and QX30 Crossover Confirmed for 2015
- Infiniti Q30 and QX30 confirmed for 2015 production
- Q30 will be a compact hatchback competing with Mercedes CLA
- QX30 will be a small crossover facing off against BMW X1
Luxury automaker Infiniti has officially confirmed that it plans to start production of two new models in 2015. According to Infiniti, those two new cars will be the compact Q30 hatchback, which was previewed last year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, and a small crossover called the QX30.
While Infiniti hasn't announced any further details about the new models, the brand confirmed their upcoming production in a tweet from Andy Palmer, chief planning officer for Infiniti's parent company, Nissan. The British-born Palmer mentioned that the two new cars will be built in the U.K., noting that he's proud of Infiniti's plans to build them there.
What should we expect from the two new Infiniti models? In terms of the Q30, we suspect that the final product will look to the brand's Q30 Concept for inspiration. The concept was originally unveiled in Frankfurt. It offered characteristic Infiniti styling, from the front grille to character lines down either side. It also boasted a 5-door hatchback body style, much like the production-ready Q30 likely will. Chief Q30 competitors should include the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA.
In terms of the QX30, Infiniti hasn't announced any official plans or shown any concepts, but we think the compact crossover will likely draw many cues from the Q30. In fact, we suspect that the QX30 will be a lifted version of the Q30, designed to compete in the growing compact-luxury-crossover segment against rivals such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Buick Encore.
Given that production of the Q30 and QX30 won't start until 2015, we don't expect to see the new models officially unveiled until next year. Sales will likely begin even later, possibly in late 2015 or even early 2016.
What it means to you: The Infiniti Q30 and QX30 bring the Infiniti brand to the premium-hatchback and compact-luxury-crossover segments.
