2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Engine Specs Announced

  • 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers up to 460 hp
  • Torque will stand at 465 lb-ft
  • Corvette goes on sale later this year

Chevrolet has officially announced engine specs for the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray. The newly redesigned sports car, revealed earlier this year, will use a 6.2-liter V8 that makes up to 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

According to Chevrolet, those figures are with the available “performance exhaust.” But drivers who don’t opt for the upgraded exhaust still get 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. That’s a strong figure, especially since the bulk of the torque — more than 300 lb-ft — is available from a nearly instant 1,000 rpm.

The newly announced power and torque figures are a strong improvement over the outgoing Corvette. Last year’s model also used a 6.2-liter V8, though it only produced 430 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to offering more grunt than last year’s engine, the latest Corvette’s powerplant boasts several other new features. For instance, the new engine uses Active Fuel Management, a first for the Corvette. Active Fuel Management, also called cylinder deactivation, turns off half the engine’s cylinders in easy driving, such as highway cruising. It leads to greater efficiency and improved emissions.

The latest Corvette engine also boasts direct fuel injection. That system injects fuel directly into a cylinder, rather than using a multi-step process like older engine designs. The result is improved fuel economy and, according to Chevrolet, greatly reduced emissions.

“The new engine’s performance complements the Corvette’s low mass with a tremendous feeling of power that builds as the rpm climbs,” said John Lee, chief engineer for GM’s small block engines. “Drivers will experience more power and acceleration than ever before with the standard engine — in fact, its power and torque surpass many up-level engines offered by competitors.”

The all-new 2014 Corvette was officially unveiled earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. Officially the Corvette Stingray, the latest model boasts an all-new interior and exterior to go along with its new engine. The hardtop goes on sale this fall, with a convertible following later in the year or early in 2014. Pricing starts at $51,995 with shipping — an increase of around $1,500 compared to last year’s model.

What it means to you: The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray packs some serious punch to go along with its new looks.
