- Smaller RAM ProMaster City cargo van coming to U.S. market
- ProMaster City will be based on European FIAT Doblo
- Rivals include Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200
Cargo van shoppers will soon have an all-new model to choose from. Chrysler truck brand RAM has officially announced that it plans to expand its lineup to offer a smaller cargo van, dubbed the ProMaster City.
According to RAM, the new ProMaster City will slot below the full-size RAM ProMaster cargo van in the brand’s lineup. That puts it in competition with other small cargo vans such as the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200, and one size below popular full-size cargo vans such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Chevrolet Express.
“The RAM ProMaster City further expands the RAM commercial truck lineup,” said Reid Bigland, RAM president and CEO. “As RAM commercial continues to gain share and grow sales in the market, we will be aggressive in our goal of expanding our commercial vehicle offerings.”
While RAM hasn’t released any official information about the ProMaster City, reports indicate it’ll be based on the FIAT Doblo, a popular small van sold in Europe. On sale since 2000, the Doblo was redesigned for the 2007 model year to offer a more stylish interior and exterior. While the Doblo is sold overseas as a passenger van and a cargo van, RAM hasn’t announced if the ProMaster City will also include a passenger configuration.
RAM also hasn’t announced what’s under the ProMaster City’s hood, though we can expect engines specifically tuned for fuel economy and pulling power. The Doblo’s European engine lineup ranges from an 89-horsepower 1.3-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder to a 133-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder.
The ProMaster City will be aimed at drivers who don’t need the room offered in RAM’s larger cargo van, the recently released ProMaster. That model starts around $29,500 and boasts two engines — Chrysler’s 280-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel that makes 174 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
If you’re interested in the RAM ProMaster City, you likely won’t have to wait long to learn more. Chrysler hasn’t announced a release date for the van but notes it will be a 2015 model. That means it’s due out sometime next year.
What it means to you: RAM’s all-new ProMaster City will give inner-city businesses a new option in the increasingly competitive world of the cargo van.
