The first Subaru electric vehicle will go on sale next year under the name Solterra.
Though we don’t know much about the 2023 Subaru Solterra, the automaker has confirmed that it will be an SUV and that it is currently being developed with Toyota on brand-new underpinnings specifically designed for an electric car.
Toyota owns a slice of Subaru and the two brands have amped up — literally — their cooperation over the last few years. The Solterra electric SUV may be closely related to the Toyota BZ4X that was unveiled last month. It’s expected that the two will share a platform and they are likely to be sized about like today’s Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4. That means the Solterra will likely be a 5-seat SUV.
All-wheel drive will almost certainly be standard on the Solterra, which may also boast real off-road chops given Subaru’s rugged image.
Though Subaru has dabbled in hybrid versions of its small Crosstrek SUV, the automaker has never offered a dedicated electric car. The 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid delivers a 17-mile electric-only range before switching over to conventional gasoline-electric power, which makes it one of the shortest-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the market.
Subaru has said that it intends for about 40% of its global sales to come from electric cars by 2030. Find a Subaru for sale
