We here at Oversteer have extensively covered the wacky GM performance editions of the late 1990s and early 2000s, but not even the Malibu Maxx SS was as totally radical as the Chevy S-10 Xtreme.

The Chevy S-10 Xtreme was a special edition of the compact pickup meant to appeal to the youth of the late 1990s, and it did so in the most Xtreme fashion. The truck was most notably lowered with a ZQ8 suspension and given a cool body kit and unique wheels -- a necessary addition for appealing to the youths. The S-10 Xtreme could either be outfitted with the standard 2.2-liter 4-cylinder or a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 with 190 horsepower and a monstrous 245 lb-ft of torque, making it capable of some totally sick burnouts.

Chevy also offered a wide array of options. You could have it with either a regular or extended cab, and you could get it with a more practical "Fleetside" (or regular) or fashionable "Sportside" (better known as a flareside) bed. The S-10 Xtreme was also very well priced for its intended market, with a starting price of just over $15,000.

These trucks gained quite the reputation for being souped-up. The youths of the late nineties, unburdened by the worries of the now ancient Cold War and blissfully unaware of the struggles of the early 21st century just around the corner, started modifying them with big turbos and superchargers. This lead to the S-10 Xtreme being a fairly regular staple at the drag strip.

But now that we're well into the next millennium, the S-10 Xtreme has been largely forgotten. Nobody covets these little trucks anymore, and most of the ones you see have been driven hard and put away wet, like many compact pickup trucks. I haven't seen a good-looking one in a long time, and that's a shame. Who knows, maybe some day we'll see a resurgence, and these trucks will start crossing the auction block with nice premiums.
