- Volvo is donating to Alex’s Lemonade Stand
- The foundation earns $10 from each September sale

Volvo is giving car shoppers a new reason to consider buying one of its models this month. That’s because the automaker is donating $10 from every September sale to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a foundation devoted to raising money for pediatric cancer research.
According to Volvo, Alex’s Lemonade Stand came to its attention during the brand’s “Volvo for Life” award campaign, which honors local leaders who make a difference in their communities. Founded in 2000 by four-year-old Alexandra Scott, who was diagnosed with the childhood cancer neuroblastoma before her first birthday, the organization began as an actual lemonade stand. Although Alex died at the age of eight, she continued to raise money for the foundation until her death, ultimately collecting over $1 million. To date, the foundation has raised an impressive $25 million to help fight pediatric cancer.
“Alex and her cause have touched our employees in a very emotional way for many years now,” said John Maloney, Volvo Cars of North America’s president and chief executive. “With this new program, every new Volvo sold helps support her dream. Our hope is that through our collective efforts we will be able to help medical experts get closer to a cure.”
Volvo says it will supplement the donations of $10 per car sold in September with a series of radio, television and print advertisements, as well as pediatric cancer public service announcements. Volvo dealers across the country will also be hosting their own lemonade stands to raise awareness and solicit donations for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
“Volvo’s incredible support dates back to the company’s role in propelling Alex to achieve her dream of raising $1 million toward the battle against childhood cancer,” said Jay Scott, Alex’s dad and co-executive director of Alex’s Lemonade Stand. “Volvo has proven that it will continue to walk alongside us as we strive to reach Alex’s mission to cure all kids’ cancer. Their willingness to donate funds per-car-sold beginning in September is only further proof of this commitment.”
Through the end of August, Volvo reported nearly 47,000 sales–a rate of nearly 5,900 units per month. If the automaker achieves a similar figure in September, it will translate to nearly $60,000 raised for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, not counting donations accepted by local dealers running their own lemonade stands.
