Updated with a new front fascia and grille appearance and revised spoilers, the 2011 Nissan Rogue blends compact-car efficiency and agility with SUV practicality and versatility. An all-independent suspension imparts a nimble, fun-to-drive feel to the 5-passenger Rogue, belying its generous 29 cu ft. of cargo room and 58 cu ft. with the rear seat folded down. A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine provides more-than-ample acceleration, although a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the only one available, sometimes makes the Rogue's forward progress feel disconnected from the engine.

Both front- and all-wheel-drive systems are available. Unique features include an available pop-up cargo organizer and a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows owners to stow ladders and lumber up to 8 feet long inside the vehicle with the rear hatch closed. Among other upgrades, the 2011 Rogue SV adds a new backup camera, a 4.3-inch display audio system with an iPod interface, Bluetooth hands-free phone integration and an optional automatic climate control and navigation system. Back for a return engagement for 2011, the S Krom Edition upgrades to 18-in alloy wheels, as well as other exterior dress-up content.

The Nissan Rogue is a good choice for young families looking for a versatile compact crossover that will fit in the garage and won't strain the fuel budget. Standard safety gear includes stability and traction control, dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags, overhead airbags and anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes.

What We Like

Available navigation system and backup camera; good interior room for five; compliant ride quality; fold-down front passenger seat for carrying long items

What We Don't

No manual-transmission choice; engine drones under acceleration with CVT automatic; limited rearward visibility

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2011 Rogue features a 2.5-liter double-overhead-camshaft 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, developing an ample-for-the-class 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It burns regular unleaded gas. New low-rolling resistance tires and aerodynamic enhancements improve the Rogue's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating to 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with standard front-wheel drive and a 22 mpg city/26 mpg hwy rating with optional all-wheel drive. The Nissan XTRONIC CVT automatic is standard.

Standard Features & Options

The 2011 Rogue is available in S, S Krom Edition and SV trims.

The Rogue S offers standard cloth seats, air conditioning, a drive computer, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with iPod connectivity, a tilt steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, 16-in steel wheels, a split folding rear seat and power windows, mirrors and door locks.

The Rogue S Krom Edition brings 225/55R18 tires on alloy wheels, a unique grille, sport fascias, fog lamps, a center-exit exhaust, a rear spoiler, rear privacy glass, body-color mirrors and steering-wheel audio controls.

The Rogue SV adds standard 17-in alloy wheels, a backup camera, a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support and a 4.3-in color audio display with USB interface. SV options include a new navigation system with a 5-in screen, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, 18-in alloys, leather upholstery, a power moonroof, a 7-speaker Bose stereo with steering-wheel audio controls, SiriusXM radio and Bluetooth phone integration, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto speed-sensing door locks, a trip computer, a dual-level front console, mood lighting, an outside-temperature display, dual visor vanity illumination, fog lamps, a sequential sport shifter with a leather shift knob, heated front seats, a fold-down front passenger seat, a cargo organizer, a cargo security shade and a garage-door transmitter.

Pricing

The Rogue is Nissan's best-selling crossover SUV and, along with the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, has ranked among the top-selling compact crossovers for several years, so you can expect Nissan dealers to have a good supply of clean examples to choose from.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the following recalls for the 2011 Nissan Rogue:

Snow and road salt saturating the driver's footwell carpet may cause a short circuit in the electrical harness underneath, creating a fire risk.

A defective circuit board for the Rogue's power steering can result in a loss of power assist, increasing steering effort and the risk of a crash.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car for free.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2011 Nissan Rogue a 4-star overall rating, with five stars for side-impact protection and four for front impacts and rollovers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2011 Rogue a Good rating for side impacts, head-restraint and seat crash performance and moderate-overlap front impacts but only a Marginal rating for small-overlap front impacts and an Acceptable score for roof strength.

The 2011 Rogue carries a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion-perforation warranty.

Nissan certified pre-owned (CPO) cars can't have more than 80,000 miles on the odometer and must be under 6 years old. Every CPO Rogue undergoes a 150-point inspection and gets a Carfax report. The Nissan CPO warranty extends the original powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles and includes 24-hour roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2011 Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 is available as a 5-passenger or 7-passenger (with a tiny third-row seat) vehicle, with options for front- or all-wheel drive and a 166-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder or a hot-rod 269-hp 3.5-liter V6 (the same V6 as offered in the Camry). Cargo room is an impressive 73 cu ft. with the rear seat(s) folded.

2011 Honda CR-V -- The ever-popular CR-V adds a value-oriented SE model for 2011. Its sole engine choice remains a 180-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with EPA fuel economy estimates pegged at 21 mpg city/27-28 mpg hwy. Both front- and all-wheel drive are offered. The CR-V offers a nicely designed, quiet interior, and navigation and a backup camera are available. Maximum cargo room with the rear seat folded is 72.9 cu ft.

Autotrader's Advice

The Rogue is a roomy, fun-to-drive compact crossover in a class not known for excitement. We'd recommend the Rogue SV over the S or S Krom Edition because the optional features on those trims are limited to a handful. All Rogues come with Nissan's fuel-saving XTRONIC CVT automatic. The CVT takes some getting used to the first time you drive one because of the disconnected feel between the engine and road speed, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Go for a CPO vehicle when possible, and make sure the Rogue you're thinking of buying has seen obvious care and maintenance. Also, check with the dealer to verify that the Rogue you are considering has had all applicable safety recalls performed.
