The LaFerrari Aperta is a drop-top version of the well-known LaFerrari exotic supercar, which was sold in a limited quantity (reportedly just under 500 units) a few years ago. The Aperta is even more limited, as Ferrari says they’ll produce just 200 examples of the drop-top supercar — the first time the brand has ever offered both coupe and convertible versions of its "supercar" line.
On the outside, the Aperta looks a lot like the original car, save for the fact that, well, the roof comes off. It’s not a power-operated top, like in some rivals, but rather two carbon-fiber panels that have to be removed by hand. It’s not the most graceful solution, but it helps save weight — and reduce complexity.
Not that the LaFerrari is a car devoted to reducing complexity. Under the skin, you’ll find a carbon-fiber chassis, a dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 6.3-liter V12 with a hybrid component that combine for a total of 950 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. The result is zero to 60 in under 3 seconds and a top speed of nearly 220 miles per hour — amazing numbers, even in today’s world of crazy exotic cars.
Of course, the Aperta is expensive — and, more importantly, it’s all sold out. In fact, you have to be invited to buy one — and if you haven’t been yet, then you won’t be. In fact, one customer even sued Ferrari when they passed him up and deemed him "unqualified" to buy the car. If you were invited to buy it, get ready to shell out serious money: The Aperta is reported to cost around $2 million.
