- The 2020 Buick Encore GX is an all-new crossover.
- It is bigger than the Buick Encore.
- It will be offered with two powertrains.
- It’s slated to arrive in early 2020.
Because crossovers account for the bulk of Buick‘s sales, the automaker must cover all the CUV bases. The 2020 Buick Encore GX will slot between the aging, smaller Encore and its larger sibling, the Envision. Larger than the Encore, the Encore GX addresses some of the Encore’s core issues, such as the tight second-row seat and the lack of safety- and driver-assist features. We expect Buick to offer it in three trim levels.
Buick has yet to release detailed specs for the Encore GX, but we do know that it will offer somewhat more passenger space than the smaller Encore (94.3 cu ft. versus 92.8 cu ft.). We anticipate that the second-row seating room will benefit from the increase. The cargo capacity takes a big jump, too, from 18.8 cu ft. in the Encore to 25.3 cu ft. in the Encore GX, as measured with the second-row seat in place.
When not in use, the second-row can be folded flat with the cargo floor. For longer, narrow loads, the passenger front-seat back can be folded flat as well.
Under the Hood
Here, again, Buick was short on details as it unwrapped the 2020 Buick Encore GX at the Los Angeles Auto Show. What we do know is that Buick will offer Encore GX with two engines. The smaller is a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine that reportedly will make 137 horsepower, and the larger is a 155-hp 1.3-liter engine developing 174 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable transmission will handle power distribution in front-wheel-drive versions. A 9-speed automatic transmission will trade cogs in all-wheel-drive versions with the 1.3-liter engine. Buick’s in-house testing puts the combined mileage estimate at 31 mpg. If so, that’s very competitive with similarly sized competitors.
Where the Encore has but a few safety- and driver-assist technologies found only on upper trim levels, Buick has loaded up the new Encore GX with standard safety features as well as some optional ones. Standard on every Encore GX will be a suite of six technologies: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, following distance indicator and automatic high beams. Available technologies will include rear parking assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change alert with blind spot monitoring, a rear camera mirror, camera-based adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist with braking and 360-degree surround-view cameras.
Available connectivity and infotainment technologies include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio capability, wireless charging and Bluetooth connectivity.
When and How Much?
Expect the 2020 Buick Encore GX to arrive in dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2020. Buick has yet to announce pricing, but all indications are that it will be priced closer to the Encore than the Envision. So think between $25,000 and $27,000. Find a Buick Encore for sale
