  • The 2020 GMC Sierra HD and the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD are both all-new.

  • The Chevy and the GMC continue to be mechanically identical, but they're more different than ever in other respects.

  • Both trucks boast impressive capabilities, like class-leading towing capacity.

The competition has seriously heated up recently in the world of heavy-duty trucks. The Ford Super Duty is still pretty fresh from its 2017 redesign, the 2019 Ram HD got an overdue update, and finally, the GM twins -- the GMC Sierra HD and the Chevrolet Silverado HD -- are all-new for 2020.

While they are mechanically similar, the Silverado HD and Sierra HD are actually more individual than ever before. They have distinct appearances, and there are certain features and options you can get on one that you can't get on the other. Let's take a closer look at the differences and similarities between these two heavy-lifters.

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD exterior

Exterior

The Silverado and the Sierra have been wearing different exteriors for a while now, but you might not even guess from looking at the all-new 2020 models that they're essentially the same truck underneath. They also look quite different from their lighter-duty 1500 counterparts, which is nice because it helps to give the HD trucks their own personalities. These trucks are also huge, so we hope you have a lot of room in the garage.

Both trucks are available in regular-cab, double-cab, and crew-cab configurations, and you can outfit most versions with a standard bed or a long bed depending on your needs. The regular-cab trucks, however, are only available with a long bed. See the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD models for sale near you or See the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD models for sale near you

Something worth noting about the exterior is that the Sierra HD is available with GMC's MultiPro 6-function tailgate, which can turn into a load stop, steps, a desk, and more. This nifty tailgate is not available on the Chevy, so if you really want the MultiPro tailgate, a GMC dealer is the only place you can get it. See the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD models for sale near you or See the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD models for sale near you

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD interior

Interior

While the exteriors are distinct on these trucks, their interiors are quite similar, and they aren't all that different from their predecessors' either. The designs are simple and functional with varying material quality depending on the model. On the low end, you can still get a stripped-down work truck with vinyl seats and a rubber floor, but on the high end, things can get pretty luxurious in the Sierra HD Denali and the Silverado HD High Country. When they're optioned similarly, these trucks are just about identical on the inside.

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD mechanicals

Mechanicals

As we've mentioned, the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD are mechanically identical. Here are their engine options:

  • 6.6-liter V8, 401 horsepower, 464 lb-ft of torque; max conventional towing: 14,500 pounds (2500), 16,800 pounds (3500); max fifth-wheel/gooseneck towing: 17,400 pounds (2500), 17,200 pounds (3500)

  • 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8, 445 hp, 910 lb-ft of torque; max conventional towing: 18,500 pounds (2500), 20,000 pounds (3500); max fifth wheel/gooseneck towing: 18,500 pounds (2500), 35,500 pounds (3500)

The base gas engine in these trucks is all-new and more capable than the base engine in their predecessors by quite a bit. The Duramax turbodiesel option is carried over from the previous generation, but it's now mated to a new Alison 10-speed transmission which boosts its capabilities by a decent margin. The base engine will have enough muscle for most drivers, but if you have serious heavy lifting to do or you just really want a diesel, then the Duramax is a great option.

Both can be equipped with more off-road capabilities, but they go about it a little differently. The Sierra HD has an AT4 trim, which is all-new for 2020, while the AT4 model gets a rugged aesthetic upgrade along with 4-wheel drive, Rancho off-road suspension, skid plates and all-terrain tires. The Silverado HD can be had with similar off-road kit in the form of the Z71 off-road package, which can be added to FWD-equipped versions of the LT and LTZ trims.

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD technology

Technology

The technology is a big area of improvement for the 2020 models of these trucks. Perhaps the most noteworthy new feature is the new transparent trailer view, which uses camera tricks that allow you to virtually see through your trailer to the road behind you. This poses a huge safety benefit because the trailer would otherwise block your view of the road behind you.

The 2020 Sierra and Silverado HD also offer new connectivity features that are useful for both work and play. Android and iPhone users can download the MyChevrolet or MyGMC app to monitor things like trailer status insights, operating temperatures, and even HVAC controls.

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD pricing

Pricing

Unsurprisingly, the GMC is a little more expensive than the Chevy. The Silverado 2500 has a starting MSRP of $34,100, and the Sierra 2500 starts at $35,600. Upgrading to the 3500 models doesn't cost a whole lot more, with the Chevy starting at $35,300 and the GMC starting at $36,800. These price gaps stay about the same or grow only slightly as you work your way up the model ranges. On the high end, these trucks can easily get into the $70,000 range.

2020 GMC Sierra HD VS 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD conclusion

Conclusion

The Chevy and the GMC are more different than ever, but at the end of the day, they still have the same engine, same chassis, and similar pricing. Which one is right for you comes down to personal preference more than anything. With that said, we think the GMC is more appealing thanks to its more handsome aesthetic, cool AT4 trim and Denali model, which delivers a unique brand of rugged refinement. We also find the MultiPro tailgate hard to resist. Find a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD for sale or Find a 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD for sale or Find a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD for sale or Find a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD for sale
