ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION

  • The Nissan Rogue is a compact SUV, while the Rogue Sport is a subcompact SUV.

  • Despite similar names, these two crossovers have some big differences.

  • The Rogue Sport got a nice mid-cycle refresh for 2020, making it more competitive.

It's always a little confusing when an automaker applies the same name to multiple different vehicles. For example, when you hear about the Nissan Rogue Sport, you may think that it's a sporty trim of the Rogue, but the two are actually completely different models. One is a compact crossover, and the other is a smaller subcompact crossover.

Let's take a look at the differences and similarities between these two Nissan SUVs.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport exterior

Exterior

The biggest difference between the Rogue and the Rogue Sport is size. The Rogue is about a foot longer and six inches taller than the Rogue Sport, and the two are identical in width. That means the Rogue Sport has a low-slung athletic stance, and the Rogue has dimensions that are a little on the bigger side of the compact SUV segment. See the 2020 Nissan Rogue models for sale near you

As for styling, the two SUVs speak a similar design language. The Rogue Sport got a facelift for 2020 that gives it a slightly revised, sharper look with a couple of new color and wheel options. The Rogue has looked the same since the 2017 model year, and it's a bold look that's aging well so far. See the 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport models for sale near you

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport interior

Interior

As you'd expect, the Rogue is bigger on the inside than the Rogue Sport. Since the Rogue is a bit big for a compact SUV, it has ample space for both passengers and cargo and it can comfortably seat four adults. The Rogue Sport is plenty roomy in the front seats, but the back seats are a little tight. The Rogue also has a cargo hold that's quite a bit bigger than the one in its smaller counterpart.

Interior design is pretty similar, with similar dash layouts and similar flat-bottom steering wheels. However, the bigger Rogue feels a bit nicer on the inside with nicer materials. The Rogue Sport can feel a bit cheap on the inside, but keep in mind that this is reflected in the price. In the case of both SUVs, they can get pretty nice inside when you get into the top SL trim.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport mechanicals

Mechanicals

The Rogue and the Rogue Sport both offer just one engine each, which makes shopping for them pretty easy. They both come standard with front-wheel drive, but they're upgradable to all-wheel drive with a slight fuel economy penalty.

2020 Nissan Rogue Engine

  • 2.5-liter inline-four; 170 horsepower, 175 lb-ft of torque; up to 26 miles per gallon in the city/33 mpg on the highway

2020 Nissan Rogue Sport Engine

  • 2.0-liter inline-four; 141 hp, 147 lb-ft of torque; up to 25 mpg city/32 mpg hwy

Despite being a smaller SUV with a smaller engine that makes less power and torque, the Rogue Sport is actually a little less efficient than the bigger, more powerful Rogue. The Rogue Sport is reasonably efficient, but its fuel economy is underwhelming for its class. Neither SUV delivers particularly strong performance, so driving enthusiasts looking for a practical SUV that's also fun to drive may want to look elsewhere.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport tech

Technology

Both of these SUVs come standard with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver assistance features, which is newly standard for the Rogue Sport. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection, and automatic high beams. The Rogue Sport adds rear automatic braking as standard kit, which is an available option on the Rogue.

Both crossovers are available with the ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system, which assists with braking, accelerating and steering. This makes driving on the highway a breeze, but remember, it's no replacement for attentive driving, and you still need to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport pricing

Pricing

The Rogue Sport has a starting MSRP of $23,240, and the Rogue starts at $25,300. They both have a pretty simple model range consisting of three trims, the base S model, the mid-range SV and the high-end SL. The top trim with AWD will set you back at least $33,040 in the Rogue and $29,800 in the Rogue Sport.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. 2020 Rogue Sport conclusion

Conclusion

The Rogue and the Rogue Sport have many similarities, but their differences are significant. The Rogue is bigger and much roomier, making it the right choice for small families or anyone who just wants the extra space. The smaller, more affordable Rogue Sport might make more sense for commuters who don't have passengers very often. Find a Nissan Rogue for sale or Find a Nissan Rogue Sport for sale
