If you’re shopping for a new compact SUV, there are a lot of great choices. Like the 2013 Toyota RAV4, the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V are either all-new or recently redesigned. Since the RAV4 is newest, we thought it would be helpful to answer some of your questions about the small crossover.
One question we heard a lot was about choosing between leather and cloth seats. The RAV4 doesn’t actually offer leather seats, opting instead for a synthetic material called SofTex. SofTex feels like leather, but is both more durable and easier to clean than normal leather. We decided to really put SofTex to the test using a kid and a dog.
Another added benefit of SofTex is that the material isn’t animal-based. If all of that sounds appealing, you should know that the new material is only available on the 2013 Toyota RAV4 Limited.

I’m trying to find out if the 2012 Rav4 “leather” seats are really leather or synthetic. Toyota won’t answer my inquiries, but I’ve read that they weren’t using leather before 2013 and kept it secret. I need to know for sure because I’m interested in a 2012 but won’t buy it if the seats are leather. Really like the side-opening back door on it though!
