• New Bentley GT3-R coming later this year
  • Commemorates successful Continental GT3 race car
  • Features improved performance over standard Continental GT V8

Bentley is adding a new Continental GT variant to its model lineup. The latest version, dubbed the GT3-R, commemorates the success of the brand's Continental GT3 race car with unique styling touches, improved suspension and braking, and more power than a standard Continental GT V8.

The most obvious changes to the new GT3-R show up on the outside. The latest Bentley variant features a unique carbon-fiber front splitter and a huge rear wing, both designed to mimic the wild GT3 race car. Other exterior upgrades include black painted wheels, huge cooling vents on the hood, and a series of unique graphics with GT3-R lettering on each side.

The GT3-R offers similarly radical updates inside. The new model ditches the standard Continental GT's rear seats in order to save weight, and it replaces the traditional leather front seats with lightweight carbon-fiber racing buckets. The result is a weight reduction of more than 200 pounds compared to a standard Continental GT V8.

But when it comes to performance, the GT3-R does more than just go on a diet. Like the GT3 race car, the GT3-R road car uses Bentley's turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 rather than the available 6.0-liter W12. But don't despair: In the GT3-R, that V8 puts out a whopping 572 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, which is an increase of 51 hp and 14 lb-ft over the standard model. That power boost, coupled with an updated 8-speed automatic transmission with shortened gearing for improved acceleration, helps the GT3-R hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds.

Best of all, the Continental GT3-R will offer performance revisions that go beyond its engine tuning. Bentley says that each model will also include upgraded brakes, a revised suspension, and a titanium exhaust designed to save weight and give the GT3-R a unique race-car-style sound.

The only problems with the GT3-R? Bentley says that worldwide production will be limited to just 300 units when the sporty coupe goes on sale at the end of the year. And while the automaker has not yet announced pricing, we suspect it will be a fair bit more expensive than the already-pricey Continental GT V8 S, which starts around $197,500 with shipping.

What it means to you: The Bentley GT3-R is the sportiest version yet of Bentley's impressive Continental GT coupe.
