With the average new car transaction price in the mid-$30k range, there are a lot of nice new vehicles that can be had in the average new car budget. Honda is one manufacturer that mostly specializes in more affordable vehicles, but also has some higher-priced offerings that are very attractive and sometimes even competitive with more expensive models from luxury brands. The perk is that you get the safety, reliability and value that Honda is famous for.
Here are seven great new Hondas for under $40,000 in 2019.
The Honda Passport is back and better than ever for 2019. It’s not as much of a dedicated off-roader as the old Passport (which was a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo) but it’s a more refined and more sensible midsize SUV that also has a rugged personality and some off-road chops when equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD). You can even upgrade to the EX-L trim and add AWD while keeping it under $40k, which adds leather seats, an upgraded infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a power moonroof. Throw in the brawny V6 and the Honda Sensing driver assistance tech suite that both come standard in every Passport and you have one of the best values in midsize 2-row SUVs. Honda Civic Type R
Honda has redefined the hot hatch with the thrilling Honda Civic Type R as the brand’s top performance car and arguably the best in its competitive class. The performance-tuned turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four engine cranks out a stunning 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and it sings a beautiful song through its center-mounted triple-outlet exhaust. The performance upgrades in the Type R include much more than just the engine, including an adaptive damper system, Brembo brakes, a limited slip differential and aerodynamics that not only look cool but also optimize performance. If you think the Type R is a little too hot to handle, the tamer and more affordable Civic Si is another great sport compact option in new Hondas. Find a Honda Civic for sale
The current minivan landscape is a small, but competitive field in 2019, and one of the standouts is the Honda Odyssey. SUVs may be all the rage, but minivans like the Odyssey are still the ultimate family vehicle with conveniences like sliding doors, a space-efficient design, and a third row of seats you can actually use. The Odyssey has a roomy, well-built interior that’s comfortable for everyone and better driving dynamics than you might expect from a minivan. At this price point, you could get the midrange Odyssey EX-L which includes leather seats, a power lift gate, Honda Sensing and the highly configurable Magic Slide second-row seats which can be moved toward the center of the vehicle providing easier access to the third row. Honda Accord Hybrid Touring
Pick any trim you’d like of the Honda Accord and you’re getting one of the best midsize sedans on the market, but if you have a budget of up to $40,000, we strongly recommend the range-topping Accord Hybrid Touring. The Accord Hybrid returns outstanding fuel economy numbers of 48 miles per gallon in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, while delivering respectable performance with 212 hp. In the top Touring trim, it becomes an affordable luxury sedan with leather seats that are heated and ventilated in front, a head-up display, wireless charging, premium audio, a memory driver’s seat, mobile hotspot capability and much more. If you’re shopping for hybrid luxury sedans, the Accord Hybrid Touring is a seriously budget-friendly contender. Find a Honda Accord Hybrid for sale
The family-friendly Honda Pilot is an old favorite in midsize 3-row SUVs for its versatility. It’s similar to the Odyssey minivan, but in an SUV package with available AWD giving you some extra traction which is nice to have in snowy climates. You can get a Pilot EX-L with AWD and come in just under the $40k mark and get similar equipment as the Passport EX-L with features including leather seats, a power moonroof, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay plus navigation and second-row passenger sunshades. Like the Passport, every Pilot comes with a strong V6 and Honda Sensing as standard equipment. Think of the Pilot as like the Passport, but more family-oriented. Find a Honda Pilot for sale
If you like the idea of the Pilot, but would rather have a truck bed than a third row of seats, then the Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup is right up your alley. The Ridgeline is different from other trucks in the sense that it has a car-like unibody construction and standard front-wheel drive (FWD) with available AWD. The Ridgeline has many practical quirks like a flat bed with an in-bed trunk, available in-bed audio, an available truck bed outlet, and a multifunction tailgate that can either swing down like a traditional tailgate or swing out like a car door. The nicest Ridgeline you can get for less than $40k is an RTL-T model with AWD which gives you leather seats, a power moonroof, navigation and the good Display Audio infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid
The Honda Clarity is a unique hatchback that is available as a plug-in hybrid, an electric vehicle (EV) or a fuel cell vehicle, but the only one you can actually buy rather than lease is the plug-in hybrid. The PHEV is arguably the best of the three variants with an impressive all-electric range of 47 miles and a total range of 340 miles with a full tank of gas. It’s only available in two trims and you can get the nicer Touring trim for less than $40k which includes remote climate pre-conditioning, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and navigation on top of nice standard features like Honda Sensing and an 8-in infotainment system.
