- 2015 Subaru Outback was named Best Family Car
- Two Mazda models earned high praise in the Value and Tech categories
- 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo scored highest in the Luxury category
The Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association (GAAMA) named the 2015 Subaru Outback as the Best Family Car at its 2015 Family Car Challenge event. Southeastern automotive journalists ranked the Outback highest among 19 contenders in its third annual competition in April, in which the latest family-friendly vehicles compete both for top score and for ranking in one of five categories.
The Outback earned the highest overall average score. GAAMA judges praised the versatile all-wheel-drive wagon for good fuel economy, impressive comfort, attractive styling and excellent safety credentials. The latest Outback, new for the 2015 model year, is rated at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.
The 2.5i Premium model includes such desirable features as dual-zone automatic climate control and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The test vehicle also came equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight safety system, which includes a highly praised frontal-collision prevention system that earned the highest rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and contributed to the car achieving a Top Safety Pick+ designation. The Outback also earned the highest 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
One Family Car Challenge judge commented that the latest Outback is “a big step forward” compared with the outgoing 2014 model. Another called its safety systems “impressive considering the price.” As tested, the Outback 2.5i Premium has a list price under $30,000.
Beyond the Outback
Also achieving high marks in the Value category of this year’s competition was the 2016 Mazda CX-5. This was no surprise to the judges, many of whom chose the CX-5 as the overall winner at the 2014 event. Another Mazda model earned an award, too: the 2016 Mazda6. This car scored highest among Tech category competitors for the second year in a row, praised for its simple-to-use yet powerful infotainment suite, adaptive cruise control, head-up display and a clever regenerative braking system designed to improve fuel economy. One judge called the Mazda6 “super stylish inside and out,” a compliment echoed throughout the competition.
In the highly competitive 3-Row category, the 2015 Toyota Sienna garnered the highest average score. The minivan outmatched its competition with ample passenger and cargo space, plus “impressive tech capabilities” such as a Blu-ray rear entertainment system that’s perfect for a long haul with the whole family.
In the Green category, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel topped competitors with an attractive balance of efficiency, comfort and capability. In fact, the 4-wheel-drive Jeep gives up little while achieving a 28-mpg hwy fuel economy rating. It delivers excellent comfort, helpful technology and the capability to tow or venture off road.
Finally, the 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo scored highest among Luxury category competitors. The go-fast family car wowed judges with outstanding performance in a stylish compact crossover packed with luxurious touches.
