2019 Nissan Maxima: First Look

The 2019 Nissan Maxima shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show represents the first significant updates made to this performance-oriented model that distinctively bridges the gap between mainstream and luxury sedan segments. The changes aren’t massive, though, so let’s dig into the styling tweaks, new features and other updates to give you a better idea of what to expect when this new Maxima arrives in dealers.

What’s New Outside?

At first glance, the 2019 Maxima’s front end probably won’t look much different than last year’s. However, look a bit closer and you might notice that the U-shaped chrome piece that surrounds the Nissan logo (what the car’s designers call the "V-motion" grille) now dips further down into the lower bumper portion. The larger outer U-chrome piece that used to provide a border for the surrounding glossy black trim has disappeared, replaced instead by that black trim directly meeting a more X-like shape of body colored trim.

The headlights have also been updated. LED projector units are now standard, while the surrounding LED accent lighting has been redesigned to wrap more completely around the perimeter of the light cluster.

At the rear, the taillights have been redesigned to feature a large clear element sandwiched between two strips of red LEDs. There are also quad exhaust exits instead of two.

What’s New Inside?

In lower trim levels, nothing at all. In upper trim levels, the various materials covering the instrument and door panels, the steering wheel, the headliner, the pillars and the seats have been upgraded for a "more premium look and feel." The new SR trim specifically now features orange accent stitching, diamond quilting, orange-accented Alcantara trim in various spots and dark satin chrome trim bits.

The new Platinum Reserve package, the fanciest Maxima available, features diamond-quilted "Rakuda Tan" semi-aniline leather upholstery, a 2-tone steering wheel and heated rear seats.

Are There Any Mechanical Changes?

Nope, everything carries over including the standard 300-horsepower V6 engine paired to a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive.

Are There New Features?

The 2019 Maxima will still come standard with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, but the number of other active safety features has been expanded within a new package known as Safety Shield 360. That enhances the forward collision system with pedestrian detection and adds blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, rear automatic emergency braking and automatic high beam control. Nissan Safety Shield 360 comes standard on the Platinum trim or as part of the SR Premium package.

Additional new standard safety equipment includes a driver inattention warning system and a Rear Door Alert that provides a reminder of children or pets have been left in back seat after turning the car off.

How Much And When Will It Be Available?

The 2019 Nissan Maxima will be available in S, SV, SL, SR and Platinum trim levels. There are just two options: the previously mentioned SR Premium package and Platinum Reserve package.

Nissan says the revised Maxima should arrive at dealers in mid-December, but didn’t release pricing at the time of this writing. Check out our Maxima pricing page, which will be updated once that information is known.
